The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COLLEGE CONNECTIONS

Last week our school staff attended a transformative conference focused on “Aiming High – Building a Culture of High Performance.” One of the most impactful insights we took away from this experience was a powerful statement made by Footscray High School Executive Principal, Frank Vetere: “Be the best at getting better.” This idea resonates deeply with our commitment to continuous improvement and aligns perfectly with our core values: Learning, Leadership, Teamwork, and Respect. Here’s how we can integrate this philosophy into every facet of our school community: Learning: At the heart of our educational journey is the pursuit of knowledge and growth. “Be the best at getting better” encourages each of us — students, teachers, and families — to adopt a mindset of relentless curiosity and self - improvement. For students, this means embracing challenges and viewing mistakes as opportunities to learn. For teachers, it means continually refining our teaching methods and staying abreast of innovative practices. For parents/carers, it involves supporting and nurturing a growth mindset at home. Leadership: Effective leadership is about inspiring others to reach their full potential. By focusing on being the best at getting better, we challenge our leaders — whether they are students taking on new responsibilities, teachers guiding their classrooms, or parents/carers leading by example — to set high standards and strive for personal and collective efficacy. True leadership is demonstrated through our commitment to ongoing development and the encouragement of others to do the same.

Teamwork: Our collaborative efforts are fundamental to our success. “Be the best at getting better” applies to how we work together as a team. This means fostering an environment where everyone — students, teachers, and parents/ carers — supports one another’s growth and celebrates each step of progress. By working collaboratively and constructively, we enhance our collective ability to achieve excellence. Respect: Respecting ourselves and others means recognising and valuing each person’s journey toward improvement. This principle calls us to appreciate the efforts of others and to provide constructive feedback that supports their growth. It involves acknowledging the strengths and potential of every member of our community and encouraging them to continue striving for excellence. As we integrate this philosophy into our daily routines, let us remember that ‘being the best at getting better’ is a continuous process, not a final destination. It’s about setting ambitious goals, being open to feedback, and supporting each other in our collective pursuit of excellence. Together, we can build a culture where high performance is not just an aspiration but a reality.
