In everything counting all things, your very best things, your very virtues and very graces, to be but dung, that you might win Christ; to have seen you continually crucified with Christ; . . . how else could we have defended our selves against you, but by calling you mad?—Alexander Whyte. 19. Triumphant “Believe me” (John 14:11). It is true that we are weak and Hu man, separating over details and quib bling over nonessentials. But it is also true—and let the truth ring until it grips and penetrates and holds our very souls—we are triumphant! Defeat can never come to God. He never revised His plan. He rules, and His purpose will be carried out in its entirety. Amd I am part of that eternal purpose. —Anna J. Lindgren. 20. A Covering of Love “Love covereth a multitude of sins” (.1 Pet. 4:8, R.V.). When Alexander’s painter brought the portrait of the conqueror to him, he was charmed to see that it was painted with his hand resting on his brow, thus covering a little deformity. God give us all the hand of mercy that covers the deformities of others, which Christ gave His life to hide—the charity which can hide "a multitude of sins.” —A. B. Simpson. 21. “In Earthen Vessels” “He must needs go through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar” (John 4:4, 5). God speaks to thee in trifles—in the passage through Samaria, in the thirst for earthly water, in the coming to a well. Say not that the little things of thy life are common. . . . Neglect not thy wells of Sychar, O my soul, for where thou seemest to be drawing only earthly water, thou mayst be partaking all the time of those living springs whereof they that taste shall never thirst again.—George Matheson. 22. His Promise “Yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry” (Heb. 10:37). Were He not to return, He would break His Word. The promise meets us again and again, and in the greatest variety of form. . . . “I will come again, and receive you unto myself.” These words come very sweetly and very gra ciously to the Christian heart. They are the promise of Him who died for us, the promise of His own lips, telling us that He will come back for us . . . and gather us home.—James Culross. 23. Interruptions “My times are in thy hand” (Psa. 31:15). “How can one ever get anything

14. Trees of the Lord “That they might be called Trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that ne might be glorified’’ (Isa. 61:3). His work is to prune us—to cut off all evil things: water us—supply us with the showers of His Holy Spirit . . . .and sometimes He puts us in darkness. Walking through the conservatory of a friend one day, my attention was drawn to a small plant completely cov ered by a flowerpot. “Do you know why I have put this slip in darkness?” he inquired. “It is because I want it to strike a deeper root.”—Robert Lee. 15. “In Nothing Terrified” “In nothing terrified by your adver saries” (Phil. 1:28). The word rendered “terrified” prop erly refers to a horse shying or plung ing at some object. It is generally things half seen aid mistaken for some thing more dreadful that make horses shy; and it is usually a half-look at adversaries . . . that makes Christians afraid. Go up to your fears and speak to them, and as ghosts are said to do, they will generally fade away. . . . Let us trust our gospel, and trust our King. —Alexander Macla'ren. 16. A New Focus “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2). The natural man naturally is self- centered.' . . . But with the new birth there is imposed a new focus of life, and in place of being self-centered, the believer is called to be Christ-centered. That involves being like Christ and liv ing primarily for others. It will make us eccentric "to the world, . . . fools for Christ’s sake in men’s eyes, that we might be wise in the eyes of God. —Northcote Deck. 17. Evil Sowing “He that soweth discord among brethren” (Prov. 6:19). The enemy does not need a great thing to cause difficulties among chil dren of God. He is content if there can be a “misunderstanding,” and thus discord is sown among brethren. Why the word “sown” ? Because it grows! “It was such a trivial thing,” we may say, but, alas, how many encourage ments have been blighted because of “a little thing” ! You do not need to break up a watch to stop it from going; put a little dirt inside, that is all. —P. W. Heward. 18. The World’s Self-Defense “Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad” (Acts 26:24). If you had come through the half of Paul’s experience, we also would have charged you with being beside your self. . . . To have seen you actually and
