According to a Digital Commerce 360 Retail News analysis of U.S. Department of Commerce reports, e-com- merce finally went back to double-digit growth of nearly 11 percent in Q3 this year even as more consumers were re- turning to stores. An estimated 20.6 percent of all dollars spent represented online orders. Q3’s performance was attributed largely by the collec- tive performance of Amazon, Walmart and Target and par- ticularly by Amazon moving its Prime Day sale to July this year, in addition to a second Prime Day on October 11-12. Inflated offline costs for food, housing and gas, and ris- ing costs to borrow money will also impact holiday e-com- merce sales this year, Adobe said. Meanwhile, Smithers.com estimates global demand for corrugated packaging is likely to increase by four percent each year through 2027. The highest growth is forecast in the processed foods and electronic industries with e-com- merce driven by internet shopping during the pandemic being one of the key drivers of that growth into the future. Smithers further identifies four trends that will impact the future of packaging: • Economic/Demographic Growth • Packaging Technology driven by sustainability • Online purchases • Brand owner trends driven by the need to protect against fake or counterfeit goods
