IT AIN’T OVER ‘TIL IT’S OVER Why Now Is the Time to Think About Your Long-Term Tax Strategy

Yep, the 2018 tax season is over! It’s natural to breathe a sigh of relief and put all those documents away, out of sight and out of mind until next spring. But this may be the most important time to engage in your long-term tax strategy. You have about 10 months until your 2019 taxes need to be filed. It sounds like a long time, but when it comes to implementing a tax strategy, it’s almost not enough. Ideally, you’ll have your tax strategy divided into quarters so you can know how you’ll make the most of your taxes in an achievable, implementable way. This is a plan you should work on with us each year to

incorporate any changes regarding the tax law and your specific life circumstances. When it comes to charitable donations, you can maximize what you give with a little planning, knowing that you’re giving back and making a strategic move for yourself and your family. This will be important when it comes time to determine whether you should take the standardized deduction or opt for itemized deductions. You’ll want to talk to your tax advisor about what contributions you’ll make to family members, if a 529 plan makes sense for you and your family, and how these would fit into your long-term tax strategy. As always,

being diligent about tax documentation will pay off come next spring. In all aspects of tax planning and strategy, we’re here to help you make it happen. As your tax advisors and strategists, we work year-round to help our clients make the most of what they have. As you saw on Page 4, this month ushers in the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. We can’t think of a better way to use those extra hours of daylight than to put yourself in a great spot with your taxes for 2019. Give us a call and find out what our team can do to help you keep more of what’s yours.
