Countries such as Algeria, which raised its national guaranteed minimum wage from 20,000 to 24,000 DZD per month effective January 2026, and Tunisia, which increased its minimum

wage at the start of 2025, have pointed explicitly to inflationary pressures as a main driver. Similarly, Egypt’s increase to EGP 7,000 per month for private sector workers, effective March 2025, came amid a period of

economic turbulence and currency depreciation. Long-Overdue Reforms The second explanation is more straightforward: for many countries, the adjustments were simply “a long time coming”.
