Beatrice had already seen it. One contractor… unpaid, out of 312 processed that week. Three hundred and eleven clean runs, and that one that didn’t make it. Payroll doesn’t get applause for the 311; they get heat for the one. Then Miles’ message came through: See, she thought, here comes the heat! Direct. Urgent. No pleasantries. Her team had been flat out all week with end- She took a look and aha! There was the issue: the timesheet came in after the cut-off. Client approval came through after payroll had already been finalised. of-month activities, reconciliations, and queries. Once the pay run is closed and sent to the bank, it’s locked. If something comes in late, we have to follow the late-payment process, approvals, documentation, making sure it’s handled properly.
At the recruiter’s desk… The sales floor was Someone is celebrating a placement. Someone is arguing about the margin. The temp desk was flat out like a lizard drinking, just a usual day, really. Miles barely noticed the chaos until his phone started buzzing. Daniel – Contractor. “Mate… I haven’t been paid.” Not angry. Just tense. “My mortgage comes out tomorrow.” Miles felt like he’d touched a live wire. That wasn’t on. He messaged payroll immediately. chock-a-block. Phones ringing.
Daniel hasn’t been paid. His mortgage comes out tomorrow. I need this sorted. He leaned back in his chair and said to his colleague, “Honestly, mate, I don’t get it. How do you miss a pay? The system does most of it. AI’s doing half of it now. You click pay, and off you go. It’s not like it’s complicated.” He wasn’t trying to have a go; he was trying to make sense of something that, in his world, shouldn’t have happened. When contractors don’t get paid, they don’t ring payroll. They ring him… Meanwhile, in payroll…
