The kettle clicked off, and he took the mug from her. “I’ll make sure my contractors understand the cut-off,” he said. “No more last-minute scrambles.” “That’ll help.” As he paused at the door, he added, “And for what it’s worth… I know it’s not just clicking a button.” She processed that for a moment, “Good” , she said. Miles went back to filling roles and keeping his clients happy. Beatrice went back to making sure everything was stacked up and nothing was left loose. Same building. Same outcome. Different pressure. And somewhere in the middle of all that, payroll did what it always does, kept things moving, so no one has to think about how much is involved.
