Miles went back to filling roles and keeping his clients happy. Beatrice went back to making sure everything was stacked up and nothing was left loose. Same building. Same outcome. Different pressure. And somewhere in the middle of all that, payroll did what it always does, kept things moving, so no one has to think about how much is involved.
They stood there in the quiet hum of the kitchen for a while, the only place in the building that didn’t feel like there was competition.
