Monday 4.20 p.m. You know that feeling when you look at something and think: This will never fly? I’d taken the brief to go through a demo of an HR system – standalone, no payroll - and suggest any enhancements. As the demo started, all looked good. The system was based on AI,
which had advantages from an information and compliance alert point of view, but could develop problems if the software took on bias aspects. I’m a fan of AI in the right place. If I instruct a bot to tell me if the gender or ethnic pay gap has widened, or if people over 40 have a flatlined career progress, or if we’re paying less than the National
Minimum Wage, then that’s all good. Anyway, as we progressed through the demo, with me asking basic questions, I just couldn’t see this being very user-friendly. I couldn’t visualise anyone using it with enthusiasm. To my mind, everything should be intuitive…we never needed training in
