BIG SAGEBRUSH Artemisia tridentata and subspecies Life Cycle: Evergreen Shrub Plant Description:
Plants average 3 feet in height but can reach up to 10 feet. Leaves are undivided, wedge-shaped, with 3 blunt lobes. Leaves are silvery blue and contain oils causing them to have a distinctive odor when crushed. Yellow flowers appear in late summer, forming panicles. Seed formation and shed occurs in late fall. Seeds tend to have a 1-year viability once shed. Highly competitive species that often limits perennial grass production to 1/3 that of areas that have been cleared. Most common woody species in western rangeland.
Treatment: 3.75-5.0 lbs per acre or 2.5 lbs per acre of Spike ® 80DF herbicide for sagebrush control. Reduced rates may be used for sagebrush thinning.
