A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

KEY SCHOOL DATES

Year 13 PCM - 4-6.30pm 27 March Year 7 Easter Bonnet Parade - 28 March End of Spring term - 28 March Easter Holidays - 29 March-12 April Back to School - 15 April

This week our GCSE historians have had the chance to visit the Old Operating Theatre on the Southbank. In 1822 this operating theatre was installed in the attic of the early eighteenth-century church of the Old St Thomas’ Hospital and it is the oldest surviving surgical theatre in Europe for female patients. The trip really brought the ‘Medicine Through Time’ course to life, as it existed at a time before anaesthetics were in use.

HOLIDAYS & NATIONAL DAYS

Ramadan - 10 March - 8 April Purim - 24 March Holi - 25 March Good Friday - 29 March Easter Sunday - 31 March Eid ul-Fitr - 9 April - 10 April Vaisakhi - 13 April

Congratulations to all the Year 11 students involved in Food Practical exams this week. As ever, the standard of food the students produced has been fantastic and worthy of MasterChef. These practical exams will continue over the coming weeks, not only in Food & Nutrition but also Drama, PE, Art and Languages. Good luck to all the students involved. Next week we will be breaking up for Easter holidays at lunchtime on Thursday 28 March. Further to the letter sent yesterday, this will be a non-uniform day, when we are joining with other local schools to raise money for UNICEF. If you would like to make a donation please do so via ParentPay or JustGiving Unicef.. This will be the last bulletin of the term as we will be publishing our magazine next week so I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful break. I know that many of our families will be celebrating important festivals in the coming weeks including Holi, Purim, Easter, Eid ul-Fitr and Vaisakhi. I hope that everyone in our wider school community finds time to rest and relax with friends and family and enjoy the lengthening days and more clement spring-time weather.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

As the exam season approaches, we recognise that it can be a very stressful time for our students and their families. We have booked the Mental Health Support Team to run a workshop for parents of GCSE and A-Level students who want to help their teenager with exam anxiety. This will run in person on 24 April at 6.30pm and there will be an alternative online session at a date and time to be confirmed. Please complete this form if you would like to attend one of the workshops. Further details will be sent out. For parents of students in Key Stages 3 and 4, The International Coalition of Girls’ Schools has an excellent six-episode podcast series called The Connected Girl. Episode 2 ‘Connecting with Parents’ explores the critical connection that girls have with their parents on the journey from girlhood to womanhood. The podcast can be accessed here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

On Wednesday, our Sixth Form netball team took part in the last game of the season against the team from Christ’s school. They unfortunately didn’t win the match, despite their best efforts. They have performed really well this year and they should be congratulated. Yesterday, all Year 13 Geography students attended an all day Tutor2U Revision Workshop, which I know they will have all found extremely useful in the lead up to their public exams. Last Friday, Lily O, who runs competitively, took part in the Essex Cross-Country Championship and came 152 out of 307 and Second out of the Middlesex team, so I would like to congratulate her for this incredible achievement. Well done! Despite how short next week will be for Sixth Form students, it will be an extremely busy one. On Monday after school, all Economics students have been invited to attend a talk by Stuart Colin Hume, who will speak to them about his career as an Environmental and Social Consultant. On Tuesday after school, all Psychology students have been invited to attend a talk by Dr. Olga Luzon. Dr. Luzon works at The Royal Holloway and is a Clinical Psychologist. During her talk, she will cover her research as well as what it is like to be a Clinical Psychologist. On Wednesday, a CV workshop has been organised. As part of this there will be a number of parents who have agreed to review the students’ CVs. Whether students are aiming for part-time work, internships, or planning their next steps after college, this workshop will equip them with the tools to present themselves confidently to a prospective employer. Students are encouraged to apply for the workshop as soon as they can to ensure they secure a place. The relevant details have already been shared on the Year 13 Careers and Progression Google Classroom. Also on Wednesday after school, parents and carers have been invited to attend the annual Parents’ Consultation Meeting. This is an opportunity to gather feedback about how their child is progressing, as well as what their children can do in order to further improve. The relevant details have already been shared via email. Finally, I would like to wish all students and parents/ carers a very restful Easter break. Students need to ensure they get some time to rest, as well as revise given how close they are to their public exams. As a reminder, the last day for Sixth Form students is Wednesday 27 March, which will be a normal day.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7 FUEL EASTER 2024

This Easter, between 2 April and 12 April 2024, Kingston and Richmond Boroughs in association with the Department for Education are running the highly successful FUEL programme once more. There are lots of clubs and activities to choose from and they run across a range of dates, time and locations. The FUEL (Feed Ur Everyday Lives) programme provides fantastic free holiday and activity clubs for children in recep- tion up to year 11, who are receiving benefit related free school meals. When children and young people come to a FUEL club they will be given a hot meal, have the chance to learn about the importance of eating food that is good for you, make friends and try lots of activities. Clubs and activities include: dance, yoga; technology and coding; skateboarding; art and crafts; cooking; indoor climbing; forest schools; karting and lots of sports such as cricket, football, netball, tennis, rugby, river sports and some swimming.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

“Letters From The Underground” by Fyodor Dostoevsky

“Letters From The Underground” by Fyodor Dostoevsky (translated from Russian) is a deep dive into the human psyche from the perspective of a man who is overly negative and is criticising himself. It is in the form of a “confession” and explores the complexity of the man’s mind. I would recommend this novella to those who want a challenging but rewarding read, that will draw you in and intrigue you.
