THE ALLEYNIAN 710
SKI RACING
MATT BURDEKIN
After a tough two years of not being able to get out to our usual snow races, it is exciting to see students signing up to compete in all three of our international races next season. In the interim, we have been continuing to compete, and to enjoy success, in the National Indoor League. In early season we struggled a little with injury, but took the opportunity to get a larger number of skiers racing across the fixtures. This also allowed us to include a number of new students whom we had not been able to see race. In the first race of the league, the National Schools Championships, our A team of Niccolò Smith, Oscar Howley, Max Meyohas and Max Karg skied superbly to win overall. Medallists included Niccolò Smith (winner U18), Oscar Howley, Michael Kondratenkov and Matias Mohwinckel. In the second race, the ISA National Schools Championships, we were pipped to the team gold by Brentwood, but the boys still skied well to gain overall second.
To complete another successful indoor season, we competed in the English Schools Open Indoor Championships. Niccolo Smith won U19 gold, and there were also medals for Oscar Howley and Michael Kondratenkov. Our A team of Niccolò Smith, Michael Kondratenkov, Archie Wright and Oscar Howley once again brought home team gold with superb racing. I would like to thank Archie Wright for his work as captain; despite being injured for the first two races, he slotted straight back into the A team with a wonderful performance. As well as celebrating the overall team wins and individual medals, it is important to highlight the successes of our B team and the progress they have made this season. After a fourth and sixth place team finish in the first two races, they demonstrated the depth we are starting to develop, when in the final races they came home third, winning the team bronze.
