WELLBEING, FREE LEARNING, PARTNERSHIPS & PUPIL-LED PROJECTS

The theme of ancestors and descendants was explored across a range of subjects throughout the month, including the Classics, RT, Science, Computing, DT and Art departments. There was also a Dulwich College Black History Month playlist, celebrating African musical artists and composers, and the Library and Archives team produced reading lists highlighting fiction and non-fiction by Black authors and thinkers. All of these events provided a versatile, creative and inclusive approach to the month, supporting the underlining message of recognising and celebrating the contribution of Black people to every aspect of society and history. In a College-wide initiative, pupils from the Kindergarten were invited up to the Senior School to research a Black British pioneer and to create a portrait of this person. These were printed as postcards to form the College’s ‘Postcard Passing on History’ initiative – a chance for the pupils and staff to send these postcards to friends, family and the wider community to play a part in ensuring that the contribution made by Black people to Britain’s history is passed on, shared with others, and celebrated. Olaudah Equiano, a hugely important historical figure whose legacy was celebrated at the College during Black History Month, said that ‘what makes any event important’ is that ‘by its observation we become better and wiser’. By inviting the College community to explore a sense of ancestors and descendants in this year’s Black History Month, it is hoped that this is exactly what has been achieved.
