YGOR SOUSA (YEAR 9) ENJOYED DISCUSSING ISSUES CONNECTED TO SOCIAL CLASS AT THIS YEAR’S ONE VOICE, TWO SCHOOLS LAUNCH EVENT ON THE CITY HEIGHTS E-ACT ACADEMY CAMPUS, BRINGING TOGETHER YEAR 9, YEAR 10 AND YEAR 11 STUDENTS FROM THE TWO SCHOOLS
The One Voice, Two Schools project gives students an opportunity to express our opinions freely, and this year, attending the launch event was an exceptional experience for me. I learnt a lot about social justice, social issues and the arguments around whether social class is still as relevant today as it was in the past. I aim to apply the knowledge I’ve gathered from the One Voice, Two Schools event in class, especially when discussing topics related to social justice. The literary workshop I attended gave me the opportunity to study parts of The Great Gatsby , an engaging book that I will definitely be reading as a result. During the workshop, we looked at the contrasts between the upper, middle and lower classes in the book, and talked about meritocracy. I was put in a small group of students from both Dulwich College and City Heights; we read extracts and discussed topic questions, before presenting what we’d discussed to the other groups. This was a very fun and exciting part of the workshop because I was able to speak to other students and exchange opinions on social class and how it impacts society. We made some very thought-provoking points and heard some incredible explanations from other groups too. After the literary workshop, we all got together with pupils from the event’s other workshops, which were on law and history, and we had an open discussion about education. We were asked about what our ideal education would look like, along with some other interesting topics. We had enthusiastic conversations with Dulwich students and touched on some really controversial areas.

Overall, I absolutely loved this outstanding experience and I really appreciated having the opportunity to speak with students from Dulwich College. In three sessions held on the Dulwich College campus, Year 9, 10 and 11 students from both schools attended writing workshops led by Year 13 students, before visiting some of the College’s beautiful spaces, as three City Heights students describe on the following page.
