THE ALLEYNIAN 710
THE 25TH PIANO COMPETITION
Luis Parés
After a two-year break, the highly popular Piano Competition returned to the music calendar on Thursday 3 February. For our 25th edition, we were delighted to welcome distinguished pianist and teacher Alexis White, Head of Keyboard at St Paul’s Girls’ School, to the beautiful setting of the Old Library. Alexis was hugely impressed by the very high standard of playing, and all our young musicians performed with assurance and musicality. A record number of applications (over 140!) meant that prizes would be highly contested, and despite quite a few Covid cases, we listened to a record 113 competitors on the day. After nearly nine hours of piano music and adjudication, the Graeme Jenkins Cup (our most senior cup) was awarded to Finlay Johnston for his outstanding performance of the fiendish Prelude in G minor by Rachmaninov. The full results are below.
