Miller Angus Farms - Top Tier Bull Sale [3/24/25]

ANGUS BULL BUYER’S REFERENCE We want to simplify bull-buying decisions for our customers. We try to present data that we believe has great economic merit and do it in a form that is easy to read and understand.

Birth Traits

CED – A higher number, more calving ease. BW – A lower number, a smaller calf. Act. BW – Ratioed and incorporated into the EPD.

Industry Trend, is Great numbers of Angus sires are reaching extremely high CED and low BW EPD values, largely due to highly heritable shorter gestations lengths. We do not see it as a positive trend when calves become to small at birth. In addition, none of these birth traits measures calf vigor of a sire’s progeny and mothing ability of the cow line.We do that for you.

Maternal Traits Industry Trend, is fascinated with chasing extremes of WW EPD and YW EPD to the top percentiles of the breed, and selection pressure will move them higher. Long-term customers that retain ownership through the feedlot have no problem producing 1450-1500# pay weight steers from bulls that range from +90 (top 55%) to +121 (top 10%) of the breed. We believe this selection criteria will help us and our customers control cow size and cow maintenance requirements and therefore cow herd costs. Scrotal Circumference (SC) – expressed in centimeters, is a pre- dictor of the difference in transmitting scrotal size compared to that of other sires. WW – Weight adjusted for age of dam to 205 days, ratioed in contempo - rary group and incorporated into WW EPD. YW – Weight adjusted to 365 days, ratioed in contemporary group and incorporated into YW EPD. Heifer Pregnancy (HP) – is a selection tool to increase the proba- bility or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heif - ers during a normal breeding season.A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Milk – is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

MILLER ANGUS FARMS ANNUAL BULL SALE 4 45% OF THE ENTIRE SALE OFFERING ARE ELIGIBLE CALVING EASE HEIFER BULLS Combined Value ($C) – an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that com- mercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Value Indexes $Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) – an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Weaned Calf Value ($W) – an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre- weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Beef Value ($B) – an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postwean- ing and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
