municipal properties but also "a network of green islands" that contribute to the physi- cal, mental, and social health and well-being of the communities. In mid-June a tour of Alfred-Plantagenet and Casselman is scheduled for visiting delegates from all five member commu- nities of the Forces francos municipales initiative. The event includes a shared meal with the delegates and members of Alfred- Plantagenet and Casselman councils at Vergers Villeneuve. Next month’s tour is a followup to a similar tour held last year in June in Saint- Anaclet-de-Lessard. Delegates last year visited various local development projects in the Quebec village that fall under the overall theme of the Forces francos municipales initiative. Similar tours of local projects in Alfred-Plantagenet and Casselman will fea- ture as part of this year’s tour along with a series of discussion workshops on subjects like climate change adaptation in municipal green spaces, developing “food forests” in urban areas, and developing resilient and inclusive public spaces. Local projects in the Alfred-Plantagenet that will receive attention during the tour include: trail development in the wooded areas of Larocque Park in Alfred, planting fruit trees in Chesser Park in Plantagenet, restoration projects for pollinating insects in Treadwell Park, and creation of a windbreak hedge in Denis St-Pierre Park in Wendover.

Next month Alfred-Plantagenet Township and the Municipality of Casselman work together to co-host visiting representatives for small municipalities in Quebec and New Brunswick. Parks and Recreation Director Manon Besner presented Alfred-Plantagenet council with a summary report May 19 on a propo- sal for next month to celebrate the Forces francos municipales initiative. For the past 12 months the township and neighbouring Casselman have been part of a project aimed at strengthening ties and allowing for an exchange of exper- tise between francophone municipalities in Canada. The Forces francos municipales initiative includes five municipal staff from five francophone municipalites: Alfred-Plan- tagenet and Casselman in Ontario, Saint-Ana- clet-de-Lessard and Saint-Fabien in Quebec, and Hautes-Terres in New Brunswick. The five municipalities all share common traits, being small rural areas that also either border along a river or have a river running through their territory. The project has resulted in a shared vision among the five participating municipalities for land use planning that encourages the concept that local parks and green spaces are not just
