People are crying out for this red-hot payroll software feature

The people have spoken. And they’ve told us exactly what they want from their payroll software.

Drum roll… It’s payroll automation. More stuff happening at the push of a button. Less stuff needing calculators, spreadsheets and late nights. People want to say ‘ta-ra’ to manual work and who can blame them? So, what does automation look like in 2023? What exactly can good payroll software automate? And even more interestingly, what does the future of payroll automation look like? Keep reading to find out. The latest industry findings In Moorepay’s latest annual survey*, businesses were asked what they’d most like to see from their payroll provider. More than half (53%) chose automation of payroll processes – that’s up 20% since the year before. Findings like this make it crystal clear there’s more to be done. Much more! Although the payroll industry has come on leaps and bounds in the adoption of modern tech in recent years, it’s evidently still behind where people would like it to be. What’s driving this insatiable desire for increased payroll automation? My colleague, Jen Morrell, senior payroll team manager, says, “It’s far more efficient and reliable to programme a system to do a task or a calculation. And the time that saves can be invested into other more strategic areas of payroll.”

Unsurprisingly, our customers say the exact same thing. They want to save their precious time with the helpful hand of automation. They also want to sleep easy at night, safe in the knowledge their payroll is compliant with the latest legislation. Bye manual stuff, hello automation At Moorepay, we’re working tirelessly to build automation at every turn. You’ll be used to the usual automated calculations in payroll software like statutory sick pay, occupational sick pay, holiday accruals, automatic enrolment and length of service; but we don’t think that’s enough. Which is why we’ve also automated as many payroll calculations as possible, as well as sending payments and submissions to HM Revenue and Customs. So, customers can simply configure their dates, input their data and the system just does its thing. We also have ‘real time pay’ coming too. This will show employees their net pay on any given day, and it will always be calculated for payroll sign-off. So ‘auto-run’ payrolls will become ‘always-run’ payrolls. And if ever there was a match made in heaven, it’s automation that’s integrated with the tools people use every day. That’s why we’re building a chat bot in Microsoft Teams. Employees and admins will use the bot to book and approve leave, ask for pay details and submit timesheets – something we think is pretty cool. The future of payroll automation: ‘Hey, Alexa!’ Technology like Alexa can switch our lights on and start the robot vacuum. What more can we expect from this kind of tech? When we developed our Alexa Skill back in 2018, we were appealing to those employees that were early adopters of digital apps outside

of work, but for work purposes. However, five years on and the pandemic has now forced digital adoption on the masses. So, what will come next? Well, one day you’ll be able to ask Alexa to initiate a pay run or update your data: “Alexa, pay Frank Smith 30 hours at his standard rate this week”. Pretty exciting, right? Plus, with a little additional artificial intelligence, employees will get quick answers to questions like “Alexa, how much extra cash will be in my pocket after tax if I work those two extra shifts?” or “how much longer would it take to pay off my mortgage if I go down to a four- day working week?” What we currently know as ‘calculating’ payroll will soon become a thing of the past. You’ll just need to sign it all off and hit ‘go’ on the payments. But from there, who knows where we’ll end up. The future of payroll automation feels limitless, and we can all look forward to more transparency, convenience and freedom.
