For most of recent history, tech firms were clustered in a handful of superstar metropolitan areas along the coasts, with only a handful of “rising star” regions including Salt Lake City, Denver, and Nashville gaining traction. Both research and anecdotal reports suggest the COVID-19 pandemic and other economic trends may have begun altering that trend and could prompt a diffusion of tech firms and talent across the country. Researchers at the Brookings Institute found that high-tech job postings in “superstar” metros like Silicon Valley decreased in the post-pandemic years, while increasing in “rising star” and other metropolitan areas across the country. 2
