§§ According to a Feb. 6, 2021 Reuters article by Marc Frank: “In a major reform of the state-dominated economy, the Cuban government will allow small private businesses to operate in most fields, eliminating its limited list of activities . . . The measure . . . will expand the field from 127 activities to more than 2,000, Labor Minister Elena Feito Cabrera was quoted as saying.” This isn’t the first such announcement that the Cuban government has made over the past quarter of a century. My guess is that what Elena is quoted as saying is: a) Not quite the truth b) A truth that will be very slow to become even partially true c) Truth wrapped up in a Gordian knot of red tape d) A lie e) All of the above ¶¶ In fact a very talented musician, something like a James Taylor of Cuban folk rock. He was also a very friendly and hospitable man. Sadly he died of a heart attack at age fifty-one in 2014. *** Dan Rostenkowski (1928-2010), Chicago congressman and powerful chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee who played a little loose with his means and his ways, laundering money through the Congressional Post Office. He pleaded guilty to mail fraud in 1996 and was sentenced to seventeen months in prison. It was the beginning of what has become a tradition for Illinois politicians.
