Last month, I mentioned how our family manages to fit in two Thanksgiving meals every year. Well, the truth is, turkey day isn’t the only holiday where this happens. Most celebrations involving food usually end up being a double feature for us these days, making this season especially filling — we all have our work cut out for us when the new year starts. In fact, Christmas has basically become a week-long affair at this point. After going to church on Christmas Eve, we go have dinner at my wife’s aunt’s house. Then on the big day itself, we visit my mother before returning home to host my mother- and sister-in-law. Some days later, we’ll visit my wife’s cousin and their kids. And, of course, each of these stops has great food and even better company. Part of the reason we drag out the celebrations so long is that we really want to make sure we visit with everyone. It’s exhausting to have a rushed Christmas running around, seeing each and every person, or trying to cram everyone together in one place. I prefer having the time to sit, relax, and talk with loved ones. I can tell my kids like that better, too. My wife’s cousin’s kids are around the same age as my daughter, and it’s interesting to see how their conversations have evolved over the years. They used to talk about toys and cartoons, but now that they’ve grown and matured more, they talk about school, sports, and their plans for the future. Time sure does fly.

I still remember when our clinic was in its first years of operation — and my daughter wasn’t that much older herself. On Fridays, I’d go pick her up from kindergarten and bring her back to the office with me. She’d walk around the office and meet patients, some of whom may remember those old days. While both my daughter and the clinic have grown since then, I’m glad to say how we care for our patients has stayed the same. In fact, it’s similar to how my family approaches the holidays. Even before I started my own practice, spending time with patients was always important to me. After all, how can you really help someone if you don’t take the time to get to know them? So, when Cornerstone Physical Therapy Health and Wellness Center opened its doors nearly 14 years ago, that principle was foundational to our success. All this time later, it hasn’t failed yet. Treating folks around this time of year is especially great because I get to hear about your own holiday feats. Those who have been my patients for a long time know I always love to chat about food — it’s one of those core things that brings people together from all walks of life. Plus, I’ve gotten some really great recipes and restaurant recommendations from these chats over the years. So, I hope you have some great meals and family gatherings this season. Running in a Winter Wonderland Tips for Running and Jogging in Cold Weather

Maybe you love the majesty of a winter’s morning, or maybe you just hate the treadmill. Whatever your reason is for wanting to run or jog outside in the dead of winter, remember to take the proper precautions before stepping out. Runners face challenges during the winter that they don’t face any other time of year. If you want to experience the winter safely, there are a few things to keep in mind. WARM UP INSIDE FIRST. If you’re planning on braving the snow and frigid temperatures, try to spend 10–15 minutes warming up before you walk out your front door. Cold weather naturally tightens muscles and joints, so stretching your limbs in a heated environment is a good way to ensure maximum comfort and minimum risk of injury when you’re running in the cold. WEAR SHOES WITH TRACTION. If your favorite running path is covered with snow and ice, you should consider finding a different route. But, if you can’t resist going down your beaten path, then you need to make sure your shoes are up to the challenge. If your running shoes have worn soles, then you’ll need to get a new pair with soles that will grip the ground better before stepping out on the ice. Regardless of how amazing your shoes are, remain vigilant about where you’re stepping. DRESS DOWN A LAYER. Yes, it is cold outside, but your body will naturally warm up as you run, just like it would with any other physical activity. Think of what you would normally wear to stay comfortable in the cold, and then wear one less layer when you’re running. Of course, you should keep other weather elements in mind as well, such as wind, rain, and snow, when you’re picking out your running clothes. Finally, if a day is particularly cold, snowy, or windy, don’t force yourself outside for the sake of your health. Sometimes, a good bowl of soup and a roaring fire can be just as physically satisfying as a run outside.

HOW IT WORKS

CRANBERRY GINGERBREAD

Gingerbread is a holiday classic of the very first order, but it’s often a construction material rather than a treat. This recipe, on the contrary, is purely for eating.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup canola oil, plus more for greasing 3/4 cup unsulphured molasses 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar

1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped 2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda

2 large eggs

1 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cloves

1/2 tsp kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Grease a loaf pan with canola oil.

3. In a large mixing bowl, mix together 1/2 cup canola oil, molasses, brown sugar, eggs, ginger, and cranberries. In a separate bowl, sift and combine flour with baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until blended. 4. Scrape batter into loaf pan and bake for 50 minutes. 5. Transfer to a rack, let cool for 20 minutes, slice, and serve.
