Helios Uses Data (CONT’D FROM PAGE 32)

From Anomaly To Action Detecting anomalies alone is not enough to prevent problems, they are simply a bunch of pings that something unusual or out of the ordinary has taken place. This is where machine learning can help. In the early stages of in- tegrating a machine learning platform such as Helios into a plant, the operators of the equipment will evaluate the anomalies and correlate them with the health of the ma- chine and the operation as a whole. For example, maybe a loud bang that registered as an anomaly was routine and did not signify an issue, while an anomaly in the form of a slight slowdown in a vacuum transfer meant that there was debris blocking the airflow. As operators label the anom- alies as to what they indicate and the severity of the im- plications, the artificial intelligence in the Helios platform begins to map these anomalies in a way that can move beyond simple observations to predictive intelligence. Over time, as more anomaly data is labeled, this can lead to the true benefit of the whole data science and machine learning endeavor: the ability to predict issues before they happen Armed with predictive maintenance insights, corrugat- ed facilities can now be fortified against the exact issues that they dread the most, making unplanned downtime, major malfunctions, and “Murphy’s Law” a thing of the past. But the list of benefits is more numerous and more impactful to the bottom line than just stopping problems before they start. The benefits also include: • More Realistic Maintenance Intervals--instead of rely- ing purely on a user manual to determine how long a certain part can be used before it has to be swapped out or serviced, this can now be an exact science. This can mean huge cost savings for facilities managers who now know that they can wait another 3 months before changing out a $10,000 part. And on the oth- er hand, it can prevent unplanned catastrophic failures when a piece or part is going to fail ahead of its sched- uled maintenance interval. • Live Monitoring, from Anywhere--In the previous corru- gated world, somebody had to be on-site and tuned in to catch a problem in action. Even if the operator was on site, if they were dealing with another issue or oth- erwise detained, an issue could occur and it would take hours or even days of effort to forensically figure out its cause. With a platform like Helios, live monitoring of anomalous activity can be seen and reviewed from a dashboard in real time from anywhere in the world. • Legacy and Redundancy--One of the biggest challeng- es facing corrugated is what has been affectionately dubbed as “the silver tsunami,” where the people with all the intelligence and experience with particular fa- cilities or equipment are reaching retirement age, and taking their knowledge corpus with them. With this type of platform, legacy information is digitally docu-
