Davis McCarroll 1917–2020 Musician, U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Army
D avis McCarroll entered the Chapter Invisible on Febru- ary 5, 2020 at the age of 102. At the time of his transition, Centenarian Brother McCarroll was one of oldest living members in the Fraternity. The eldest of five children, David McCarroll was born on March 29, 1917 in Winona, MS to Martin and Lucy McCarroll. The McCarroll family moved to East Chicago, IL in 1923 and subsequently moved to nearby Gary, IN in 1927. McCarroll attended Gary’s historic Roosevelt High where he played the tuba and bassoon in the school band. After graduating from high school, Mc- Carroll attended historic Lincoln (MO) University in Jefferson City, MO where he also played in the band. While in college, McCarroll joined the fraternity as a 1938 initiate of the Lincoln (MO) University Chapter, the Alpha Mu of Kappa Alpha Psi ® . During his time at Lincoln, the facility and staff had some future prominent Kappa Men. Renown chemist Dr. Moddie Taylor and future U.S. District Court Judge the Honor- able James B. Parsons were members of the Lincoln faculty. Two future Grand Historians, Dr. R. Clyde Minor who served as the Dean of Men, and Lorenzo
Symphony from 1961 to 1981 where he played string bass. Since 1972, he was a member of the St. Thomas Commu- nity Church. In retirement, he and his late wife Helen travelled and enjoyed the compa- ny of their children and grandchildren. In 2004, McCarroll was diagnosed with macular degeneration. He used the in- tensive session for the visually impaired at the Hines Blind Rehab Center to learn life skills to remain living indepen- dently. Brother Davis McCarroll is preceded in death by his wife Helen (née Lee) McCarroll; daughter Karen McCarroll Coleman; his parents; sisters Frances McCarroll and Beatrice McClain; son- in-law Greg Stramm. He is survived by his daughters Linda Stramm and Shirley Kindle; son Fred McCarroll; grandchil- dren Matthew, Bryan, Giles, Darshan, Dorian, and Tiamaat; sister Irma Orr; brother Rixie McCarroll; son-in-law Joseph Coleman and a host of friends and relatives.
J. Greene were members of the univer- sity staff. Brother Dr. Kenneth Billups who composed the musical arrangement to the Kappa Alpha Psi ® Hymn was initiated into the Fraternity with Brother McCarroll. The 12th Elder Watson Diggs awardee and the 8 th Western Province Polemarch Brother Charles Sudduth was also a member of Alpha Mu Chapter at the time. McCarroll left Lincoln and went to work back home in Gary for U.S. Steel. In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served at many military bases including Ft. Hood in Killeen, TX. He attended Army Communica- tions School in New Jersey and in 1946 was honorably discharged with rank of Sergeant. McCarroll returned to work at U.S. Steel working as an overhead crane operator. To support his family, he joined the U.S. Postal Service as distribution clerk and as an evening jani- tor at the Gary Public Library while still employed at U.S. Steel. With the U.S. Postal Service, McCarroll later worked as a window service technician and retired from USPS in 1981. McCarroll was a member of the Gary (IN) Alumni of Kappa Alpha Psi for many years. McCarroll was also a long- time member of the Northwest Indiana
