William J. Warren, Sr. 1916–2019 Educator, U.S. Army

W illiam J. Warren, Sr. 2019 at the age of 103. Brother Warren was featured in an article highlighted Kappa Centenarians in the Winter 2015 issue of The Kappa Alpha Psi ® Journal. At the time of his passing, Brother War- ren was one of the oldest living mem- bers of Kappa Alpha Psi. Born April 10, 1916 and raised in the farming and fishing community of St. Helena Island, SC, Warren received his formal education from the Penn Center (Alpha Lambda 1940) entered the Chapter In- visible on November 16, School graduating in 1934. Upon graduating from high school, Warren attended South Carolina State College (now University) in Orangeburg SC where he graduated in 1940 with a B.S. degree in agricultural science. Brother Warren was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and later served in the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge from the military, Warren pursued graduate studies in horticultural science at Ohio State University and earned a master’s degree from Michigan State University. He returned to his native South Caroli- na and in 1957 began his college teach-

ing career in horticulture and landscap- ing design at the South Carolina State College School of Agriculture. Warren helped to develop efficient farming techniques in the School of Agriculture’s experimental farm program. During his tenure at South Carolina State, he pursued a post-master’s degree in Horticultural Science from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. In 1971, he began teaching botany in the School of Science and continued his post-master’s degree in education at George Washington University. He published numerous articles based on research he conducted on rural water. This project resulted in greater under- standing of water quality and strategies for water quality improvement. In 1984, he retired from South Carolina State University as an associate profes- sor of biology. In retirement, he served as a member of the board of the Edisto Gardens program and hosted a radio program on landscaping. Brother War- ren was a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi and a member of the Orangeburg (SC) Alumni Chapter. He was also a member of the New Mount Zion Baptist Church, a member of the American Legion. Brother William J. Warren, Sr. was

preceded in death by son, William, Jr. (Kingstree (SC) Alumni 1976). He is survived by wife Johnnie W. Warren; daughters Eloise Mooney and Yvonne M. Woodward; grandsons Paul Mooney and Brian C. Woodard (Greensboro (NC) Alumni 2007); granddaughter Christina Woodward, great grandson Elijah Woodward.
