TIMELINE: ROLL CALL OF CHAPTERS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE STRUGGLE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND RACIAL EQUITY
“
By W.H.J. Beckett, Senior Vice Grand Polemarch, T he Kappa Alpha Psi Journal, March 1931, Vol. 17, Num. 5. Boys and girls in the schools and colleges must be reached and guided aright in their vocational choices. They must be shown the outreaches of the newer occupations and the new opportunities in unexploited fields.” The new technological structure in industry demands readjustments in the training and utilization of the worker. Transitions in industrialization are slowly absorbed by the manual and unskilled worker and the wastage and loss present overweening problems en mass for the socially minded of the group. The Negro workers being approximately 75% of the unskilled classification are usually the first to feel the effects of these structural changes and the last to be reached by remedial measures. Guide Right Week comes with singular appeal this year when the whole country is yet in the clutches of one of the fiercest economic depressions ever faced by our people. Educators are turning their faces toward a solution of the problem of industrial unemployment with a new determination to fore- stall such a calamity as workers are confronted with today. Here stands America, the richest country on the earth, with resources untapped and with mints overflowing; yet with starkest poverty and suffering and misery on every side. The opulent rich and the distressed poor walk side by side, and our politics and economics and religion seem powerless (or care- less) about a remedy.
