TIMELINE: ROLL CALL OF CHAPTERS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE STRUGGLE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND RACIAL EQUITY

ΕΝ 1968 The Southern University at New Orleans Chapter, the Epsilon Nu of Kappa Alpha Psi is chartered. — The Northern Michigan University Chapter, the Epsilon Xi of Kappa Alpha Psi is chartered. — ΕΟ ΕΠ The Northern Illinois University Chapter, the Epsilon Omicron of Kap- pa Alpha Psi is chartered. — The West Texas A&M University Chapter, the Epsilon Pi of Kappa Alpha Psi is chartered. — Thurgood Marshall is the first Black appointed to the U.S. States Supreme Court. — The 12 th Street Riot in Detroit, Michigan lasts five days and resulted in more than 43 dead scores more injured and more than 2500 retail locations vandalized. A raid of an unlicensed club provided the kindling. — The movie industry in- creases its focus on topics involving race relations, stimulating a national conversation.

Dr. King delivers his "Moutaintop" speech in Memphis, Tennessee on April 3 rd . — Dr. King is assassinated the next day at the Lor- raine Hotel.

1966 Blacks contend with discrimination in housing and lack of equal treat- ment. Individual circum- stances are covered by the media. — The Black Panther Party is founded. — Edward Brooke is elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts, being the first Black senator since 1881. 1967

Carl B. Stokes, Esq. (Alpha Omega 1950) becomes the first Black elected mayor of a major U.S. city, when he be- came the 51 st Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Later, he served as Ambassador to the Republic of Seychelles.

Protests ensue in at least 150 cities in response. — Robert Kennedy is assas- sinated.

At the Summer Olympic Games, Tommie Smith and John Carlos raise their fists to symbolize Black power and unity after winning the gold and bronze medals, respec- tively. — In Powe v. Miles, the Court holds that portions of the private colleges that are funded by public money are subject to the Civil Rights Act. — Shirley Chisholm is the first Black woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress.

Ernest H. Davenport becomes the 19 th Grand Polemarch and served from 1967-1970. — Alumni Chapters of Kap- pa Alpha Psi are chartered in the cities of Riverside (CA) and Tuscon-Sierra Vista (AZ). — In Loving v. Virginia, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that prohibiting interracial marriage is unconstitu- tional.

Arthur Ashe (Upsilon 1963) wins U.S. Open and goes on to be the first Black man to win Austral- ian Open (1970), Wim- bledon (1975) and be ranked No. 1 in the world in 1968. — The Civil Rights Act is signed. Included within it is the Fair Housing Act, banning discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing. — The Poor People's Cam- paign marches on Wash- ington, D.C.
