T-Graphfor Social Skills Respect,Reciprocity, or Relationship Building It is important to ensure that students understand and respect the process. This may require some teaching and modeling

of expected behaviors in a Mock Trial. Purpose of the T-Graph for Social Skills:

The teacher writes the desired social skill (such as respect, reciprocity, integrity, etc.) at the top of a T-Graph on yellow/gold butcher paper. 2. Teams discuss the definition of the social skill and offer ideas. The teacher writes these ideas around the social skill word, creating a mind map. 3. The teacher labels the two-sided column: "See" (with a sketch of an eye) and "Hear" (with a sketch of an ear). 4. Students brainstorm what the social skill would look like to others. For example, if the principal were to be walking by, what would he/she see or hear. Role-playing is encouraged to stimulate responses. For instance, the teacher could place supplies in front of one student versus in the middle of the table. 5. The teacher writes down ideas under the "See" side and adds a sketch near each idea. 6. Similarly, students brainstorm what it would sound like to hear students and teachers using the social skill. The teacher writes down ideas under the "Hear" side and adds sketches or real pictures to aid comprehension. 7. Ideas are articulated in the positive form only, avoiding the use of the word "no". The teacher helps students rephrase any negative statements into positive ones. 8. Specific words that would be heard are enclosed in quotation marks, for example, "Thank you", "You're welcome!" 9. Keep the chart in the front of the room to easily refer to it to reinforce positive behaviors. Revisit the chart often, this is a working document in the classroom.
