Here are several 5E project-based learning activities to support teaching Cherokee Nation: A History of Survival, Self-Determination, and Identity. Each lesson follows the 5E instructional model Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate and is adaptable for students studying U.S. history, Indigenous studies, or social justice.
1. The Cherokee Homeland Engage: Show images or a short video of the southeastern woodlands. Ask: What do you think life would be like living here 300 years ago? Explore: Students examine maps of traditional Cherokee territory, waterways, and trade routes. Explain: Discuss how the Cherokee homeland shaped their economy, community structure, and worldview. Elaborate: Create a travel brochure or digital presentation about the Cherokee homeland, highlighting geography and cultural significance. Evaluate: Students write a reflection or quiz identifying key geographic features and their impact on Cherokee life.
