Robert Elliott & Sons Angus Practical Performance Angus Since 1935 “form follows function…think about it” A SHORT HISTORY OF OUR 91 YEARS
Robert Elliott was the second oldest of six children to be raised on the family farm in the heart of the Great Depression. During high school, he worked on the farm and anywhere he could find work to help the family make ends meet. He saved what money he could because he had a dream. That dream was to make a living farming on the small family farm in the rolling hills of north middle Tennessee. He wanted to raise registered Angus to increase the income from the farm. Upon finishing high school in 1935, he took his entire savings and purchased four registered Angus bred heifers. This was a bold step in the middle of the Depression, but he had his dream. In 1942, he married Margaret Bush and they raised three children, furnishing all three with a college education, something that they never had. They made sure the children understood the meaning and rewards of hard honest work. The Angus herd grew. In the early 1950s, Robert realized that most cattle were sold by the pound and cows that did not wean a big healthy calf every 12 months did not make you as much money as those that did, and he did not have time to manage cows with problems. Robert started keeping records by hand on weaning weights, calving intervals and identifying cows and sires that had problems. He did not just keep records; he used them to cull the cows and bulls that did not measure up. He sold the low growth, slow breeding, bad udders, foot problems and bad dispositions at the local sale barn. With the philosophy, “I don’t care who your dam and sire are, where they, or you, placed in a show or what your last calf did, you have to add to my bottom line, and you must do it on grass. If not, you are gone.” Things changed in his herd. Pounds weaned per cow in the herd went up; cow numbers went down; and profit rose. In 1958, Robert enrolled his herd in a new program at the University of Tennessee called Tennessee Beef Cattle Improvement Records. He was the first Angus breeder to do so and the first to take birth weights on all of his calves. In 1966, his oldest son, Joe, used an analysis of these records to become a national winner in the 4-H beef project. Joe’s oldest son, Lake, returned home in 2005 after college and a stent working at another Angus seedstock operation. Lake added youth, a fresh overview and a more up-to-date formal education to our operation. William’s sons, Robert and Will, both returned after college and have off the farm jobs but spend a lot of time helping with the operation of the
farm. Robert’s daughters, Meredith and Bailey, keep everyone on their toes. Meredith is showing her 4-H calves and Bailey, who is still too young for 4-H, is her herdsman. They want to change our name to “Robert Elliott and Daughters.” We believe in measuring economically important traits, because you cannot manage what you do not measure. We have been doing both since the 1950s. We do have a few rules of management that we have put into place over the years, and we feel they are time tested. They are as follows: 1. Match our genetics to our resources and the resources of our bull customers. 2. No bad genes in equals no bad genes out. In other words, do not use an animal that has a big weakness. 3. Breed for balanced EPDs; cull on performance and structure. 4. Use proven genetics. 5. Always remember that numbers are just a tool. They do not tell the entire story. 6. Treat all animals in a contemporary group alike. If you don’t, your ratios and records are meaningless. 7. Do not get a membership in the bull-of-the-month club. 8. Only use genetics from an outfit that has to make their cattle pay their way. Anybody who passed sixth grade math can breed numbers, but can they breed cattle? 9. Always remember that maximums do not keep you in business but efficiency will. 10. Realize that trend is not destiny. Over the years “Form follows function...think about it” has become the byline at Robert Elliott and Sons Angus and we do it “In the Real World on Grass.”
Dear Friends, One of the most astute cattlemen that ever walked the face of the earth was Dave Pingrey. He stated that the only way to truly evaluate a cow is “In the real world on grass.” That is what we have done for over 90 years. We start each year with about 60 heifers, but by the time they are five we have about 30 remaining in our production herd. We don’t just collect data, we use data! We have found over the years, using data and cowboy logic, that the following statements ring true. Foundation traits not fads will move you forward. Many times, the hot sires will burn you. In the cow/calf business when one puts a pencil to their practices, they discover the need to focus on profit per acre not profit per cow. Better is always more advantageous than bigger. Choose balance over extremes. The bulls and pairs in this sale are the result of the above philosophies applied. Don Laughlin from Missouri might have stated this best, “Control genetic improvement, don’t risk it.” We would like to thank three great employees who are great people, Gaudencio, Javier and Salvador. Their dedication is one of the biggest reasons of our success. We welcome you to contact us and come inspect the cattle before the sale. We will likely have more time to visit and answer questions than on sale day. Your greatest opportunity for better profits in the cattle business is with PROVEN Angus genetics. Sincerely, The Elliott Family MONDAY • NOON CST FEBRUARY 23, 2026 AT THE FARM • 1291 N. STROUDSVILLE ROAD, ADAMS, TN v e r s a r
Robert Elliott & Sons has been recognized by the American Angus Association for their commitment to collecting and submission of data on multiple traits to AHIR. This data builds the foundation to help move the Angus breed and the beef industry forward. This past year we were recognized for collecting and submitting data on at least 11 traits on the animals in our herd.
Raising quality registered Angus that can thrive in the real world takes commitment. Here at Robert Elliott & Sons we are dedicated to improving Angus genetics to better serve the beef industry. This all starts with the cow and that is why ALL of our cows are enrolled in Maternal Plus which is a whole herd inventory reporting system.

AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS
All registered animals in this sale have genomic enhanced EPDs. Due to lab turn-around time, some of the younger calves’ genomic profiles were not returned from the lab by press time, but they will be available by February 1, 2026. Such calves will be denoted with an “I” in front of their EPDs in the footnotes. You can email us, and we will gladly forward their genomic enhanced EPDs. We know of nowhere else that you can purchase calves of this age that have genomic enhanced EPDs. All registered cattle in this sale are free of all known genetic conditions either by pedigree analysis or DNA test run by the American Angus Association.
Genomic results are a way to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the animal’s own performance for the trait, such as carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls. With the investment in genomic technology, this means that in addition to the pedigree, performance and progeny information that are used in the calculation and reporting of Angus EPDs genomic test results have also been incorporated into the EPD. Genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) are important because they make use of the results from the DNA test, in addition to all other sources of information, to provide added accuracy and reliability to the animal’s EPDs. In fact, depending on the trait GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired, in the case of a bull or in the case of a female raised, 8-20 calves.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), is expressed in dollar savings per cow each year due to lower cow maintenance energy requirements (due to lactation and body size) with a larger number being more favorable. Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning feedlot merit (growth and feed efficiency) compared to progeny of other sires, assuming producers retain ownership of cattle and sell on a carcass weight basis. Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot and sell on a carcass merit grid. Combined Value ($C), an index, expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

STAYING THE COURSE: DEVELOPING A BREEDING PLAN AND STICKING TO IT Troy Rowan, Assistant Professor Department of Animal Science, University of Tennessee
For good reason, any good animal breeding class starts not with EPDs or heritabilities, but with a discussion of breeding objectives. The Beef Improvement Federation defines breeding objectives as “goals for specific traits that can be influenced through selection.” In essence, it’s a framework for where we want to move our herd genetically. It is the absolute core of what we do as livestock breeders, yet it is frequently skipped over in our decision-making process. Often, I see operations, commercial and seedstock alike, make bull-buying or mating decisions that are at odds with their core goals. This often is to chase some sort of fad or overreact to an industry trend. Cattle generation intervals are long: As such, reactionary breeding decisions are likely to be out of style by the time we see the effects play out. Sound breeding objectives help us stay the course with our genetic program, consistently accumulating genetic improvement Developing a breeding plan is easy enough, but it can have an enormous impact on an operation’s long-term success. Ideally, these plans focus on enhancing profitability through selection for economically relevant traits: traits that either generate revenue (e.g., weaning weight, carcass weight) or reduce costs (e.g., feed intake, heifer replacement). They should also be somewhat specific to our own operation, capturing traits of particular interest or weaknesses that we want to pay special attention to.
Breeding objectives can be adjusted as we address weaknesses, but it is crucial that we maintain consistency in the core drivers of profitability. Breeding plans can include dozens of traits, but the two most important drivers of which traits we account for should be the operation’s marketing plan (i.e., when do we sell calves) and its plan for replacement heifers (i.e., do we retain replacement females or buy them). Understanding these two pieces outlines a general framework of traits that should be included in our breeding objective. Economic selection indexes are invaluable tools for simultaneously advancing multiple traits to maximize profit. For example, a herd that markets calves at weaning and retains its own replacement females would be best suited using a maternal index like $M. We can then supplement this overall metric with EPDs for other traits to advance specific areas of interest. The primary role of a breeding plan is to ensure we invest in the right genetics (i.e., bulls). As such, commercial operations should purchase bulls from seedstock providers with aligned breeding programs. Herds with maternally oriented breeding objectives don’t need to buy bulls from a seedstock herd focused on improving carcass quality. Conversations with your bull provider are invaluable in ensuring that your breeding plans are well-aligned.

Friends and Fellow Cattlemen, Robert Elliott and Sons, a program rooted deep in tradition, continues its legacy of producing high-quality Angus cattle with a new look as it starts its 91st year in the business. An admirable trait of RES is their ability to stay the course and not get caught up in chasing fads or trends. For example, it’s only taken 30 years to transition from a “skinny” black and white sale book to a “full-sized” color sale book. As you flip the pages of their 2026 sale book, I think we can all agree the new look is great and different, but the exceptional cattle in it meet the standard you’ve come to expect from the RES brand. Through rigorous genetic selection they narrow their focus to a short list of AI sires that help them accomplish the breeding goals they set to better serve you, the customer. As a result, 50 high-quality Angus bulls and 30 3-in-1s will be offered for your appraisal on February 23rd, 2026, in Adams, TN. It is important to point out that all their five-year-old cows will be sold, with none held back. This method is something they have done for years, and it gives you the opportunity to purchase proven, youthful cows. On the bull side of things, every lot in the sale qualifies for full TAEP reimbursement. Whether you need a calving ease bull, growth bull, or an all-around bull, they have something to meet your needs. It is an honor to assist in the marketing of this historic Angus operation. I hope you can join us on the last Monday in February. If you cannot attend, feel free to reach out, or online bidding will be available through www.dvauction. com. Hope to see you there! Thank you,
Mark C. Sims

Dam served as a donor in our herd. Two maternal brothers used in our herd. Maternal brothers sell as Lots B, 13 and 14. Selling full possession with possession starting April 10, 2026. Retaining one-third semen revenue-sharing interest.
A LITTLE ABOUT OUR BULL MANAGEMENT All of these bulls were raised without creep and their dams received NO grain, silage or baleage. From their fall birth until weaning in early June, they were fed mother’s milk, grass hay and pasture. In July, they went on a high fiber ration and crabgrass pasture and/or free choice fescue hay if the pasture was short. This is the sixth year we have fed Cargill Ranger Limiter, which limits the feed intake. These bulls, on average, ate 1.8% of their body weight per head per day. The purpose of this feed test is not to obtain maximum gain and high yearling weights but to identify bulls that do not express desirable growth when given the opportunity. From mid-November until sale day, the bulls were hand fed 60% soyhulls and 40% cracked corn at the rate of about 1.5% of body weight per head per day plus free choice fescue hay. These bulls have run on 25+ acres since weaning. Yearling data was collected in late October and the culls were hung upside down. A complete breeding soundness exam has been given by Dr. Darrel Holt, DVM, and Dr. Tab Spoonamore, DVM, before the sale. All bulls have DNA enhanced EPDs and are parent verified using DNA. Dam’s Data Beside each bull’s EPDs in this sale book are his dam’s age when the bull was born, her weight the day this bull was weaned and her calving interval. In the case of an ET calf, the dam’s data was taken when she weaned her last natural calf before flushing. Please pay close attention to the dam’s age when you analyze this data. Remember, once our heifers have calved we run them with the mature cows with no extra care. The ET calves are out of older proven cows, and donor cows tend to gain weight when you flush them. Sale Order Lots 1 through 47 will sell in lot number order with Lots A, B and C selling at a yet undetermined place among Lots 1 through 47. The female sale order will be posted SALE DAY. An updated breeding and pregnancy exam sheet will be available sale day.
