As I sit to write this cover letter it’s February 5, sunny and 55 degrees outside. And I’m wondering why we brought the rest of the heifers up close to the barn for calving, but I’m sure between now and March 6 mother nature will throw a curve ball at us, and we’ll know it was the right decision. We certainly want to take this opportunity to give a huge THANK YOU to you for your interest in our programs at ES & JK. The fact that you even are taking the time to read this letter means more than you’ll ever know. We have one new face since last year, we want to congratulate Billy & Nadine on their 1st birth, a little boy named Case. On the ES side, after eight years, Becki finally got Greg to say “I do” back in July which happened to be a gorgeous day for a wedding. Whether you take in a livestock show, have lunch at the local sale barn or do a cash flow with your banker, if you own some cattle, these are good times! My dad, Raphael, always said it doesn’t hurt to pitch a little shit once in a while, what he meant is it’s good to be diversified. The variety of options I believe is one of the things that make this sale unique, the most obvious is you have Simmentals and Angus, then go a little deeper into each breed and you have calving ease to high growth and/ or maternal genetics. On the Simmy side, you can go from purebreds to percentages or black to reds. And don’t forget about the females, some will even have calves alongside. We are truly your “One Stop Bull Shop”. Like everything else in the world today, technology is changing the way we do things, and the cattle industry is no different. Taking DNA on each animal is just common practice for us at ES. Once you have the DNA on file, it opens the doors to ASA’s programs like Cow Herd Roundup and Calf Crop Genomics. Then if you put a little jet fuel with DNA we use programs through Top Genomics like Right Mate where they tell us which bull on our list genetically makes the most sense for each mating when A-ing our cows. Then we have Right Choice which is the logos you see on each lot to help you with your bull selection decisions. Then if you really want to zero in on which bull is the best fit for your herd, we have the Right Bull program. Give

us a call on this and we’d be happy to visit about the program. Again, this year we worked with Allied Genetics to secure some embryos out of some elite donors around the country to offer some bulls with new, fresh genetics. We feel there are some very interesting options there. We’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the “Kummer Crew”, Glen, Kurt and Heath for all their commitment and effort with the embryo calves. One new category we added this year to the bulls is a docility score to the Simmental bulls. Everybody has a little different tolerant level and we just wanted to the best of our ability, make sure a bull doesn’t get into the wrong situation. We did the scoring in the video pen when they were sorted by themselves. The ironic part is a couple I scored a 2, the next day back in their pen, they came up and licked my hand, but we kept them as a 2. The sale will once again be a video auction, and videos will be available by mid-February on our website and DV Auction. We will have a change in format, HEIFERS SELL FIRST , followed by the Simmental bulls, then Angus Bulls. The cattle are always available for viewing prior to the sale. The Simmental bulls and heifers are at ES and the Angus bulls are at JK. Each of our operations is only two miles off I-90 but there are fifteen miles between exits. Thanks again for your interest in our operations, it’s not taken lightly. If there’s anything we can do , don’t hesitate to call. Come early and stay after for some great hospitality.

Hope to see you on March 6th!

Precision genomic selection tools FOR THE FUTURE of commercial beef production

TOP GENOMICS

powered by

Many of you have seen the unprecedented results created by the RightMate and RightChoice tools for precision matings in the beef genetics industry. Now, Top Genomics oers tools that use the same, cutting-edge technologies, but in a format that is better suited to the way most commercial herds breed cows. With a genomic snap-shot of your commercial cow herd, it is possible to sort a group of sale bulls or AI candidates to best match your particular situation and wishes. RightBull provides substantially more insurance of success than just paging through a catalog or walking from pen to pen. Ultimately, you make the decisions from the prescribed short list based on the traits and factors you prioritize.

The PROCESS 1

Additional Options

TOP GENOMICS Access, if genotypes are currently available, or genotype a minimum of 25% of the existing cow herd (25 head minimum in cow herds <100). This minimum percentage may dier slightly depending on group sizes and total females to mate, but the more females genotyped the more accurate the evaluation. For some this will be a decision to genotype the entire herd or at least all of the young females. The information delivered to Top Genomics must be in the form of raw genotypes and not genomic scores (please contact Allied for questions) in order to get the core information needed for RightBull. Get permission from you seedstock provider to access to the bull genotypes and EPDs, then transfer that information along with the genotypes of the cow herd to Dr. Mahdi Saatchi at Top Genomics, LLC. If he already has those genotypes, this process is even easier. Participate in a conversation with sta regarding your mating plans and breeding objectives so that the results can be better customized to your management practices and genetic goals. Top Genomics will provide you a RightBull ranking and %Genomic Match for bulls in that particular oering for you to use as an important “rst sort” in preparation for purchase. Please allow 5-8 weeks from the time you collect DNA samples to expect results, but just 2 weeks for the RightBull evaluations to be completed if your cow’s genotypes are already available.

Full Brothers favorite heifer out of 100+ in the replacement pen is a full sister, which we donated an IVF flush with the proceeds going towards the 2027 North Central Regional Classic to be held in Huron, SD. We would like to thank Kevin Healy for purchasing that flush at the South Dakota Source Sale. • A pair of brothers that are becoming kind of special, their dam, JC Ms Mayhaylay 109J, is making a name for herself. We purchased a few embryos out of her two years ago not knowing what to expect. Last fall at Gibbs Farms Production Sale, their leadoff and high selling bull for $80,000 was out of her, then in the heifer division, their high selling heifer at $45,000 was also a Mayhaylay daughter. • It’s easy to like these two brothers when you enter the pen as they are physically impressive backed by their PWG, N109J-1 is #2 and N109J-2 is #4. Only 2lbs separate their YW’s so as you can see on the scale, they are very comparable. • Here’s the real cool part, Adam’s

• This bull has come a long way, started out with an actual 72lb BW out of a 1st calf heifer and went on to ratio 102 for WW and 105 for YW. • Kind of a cute story on his dam. We purchased her from Harts a couple of years ago thinking she was an ES Solid Gold daughter but ended up being a WC Need For Speed daughter. It looks like it’s going to work out just fine. • His sire, CCR Bedrock, is a good- looking bull that is gaining in popularity across the country.

• I don’t know how they’ll lay out in the catalog, but I’ve done quite a few footnotes on the CCR Bedrocks and man are they a consistent sire group for type and kind. It’s been 25 years since we went to the NWSS with a pen of bulls, but I think we could come up with pen of Bedrocks and be respectful. • Cathy and I made a trip to California last fall and attended our good friends, Tim & Jill Curran’s bull sale. They had a group of Bedrock sons in the offering; they were an awesome sire group that was very uniform also. • Like the fact that he’s out of a Five Star Jackson cow on the bottom side and Cowboy Cut on the top side.

• I’m sure you’ve heard the saying“even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while”, I think he found the whole acorn tree here. • We purchased a flush from the famous GW 038W cow wo was put on the map in Lewistown, where she raised the Lot 1 leadoff bull four different times for Gateway Simmentals, who explained her nursing ratio of 110 on 11 natural calves. Since she left the ranch and went into embryo production, she currently has 111 ET calves recorded with that number still climbing and I believe she’s now 17 years old. • It was an easy decision which bull to use on the flush. It was the $100,000 bull, Bridle Bit Recharge, purchased by CK Cattle, Highmore SD. It’s a great combination molding the CE and carcass and maternal traits of Recharge with the power and performance of the GW 038W cow. If I was a commercial producer, this flush of full brothers would be high on my list. • As close as these full brothers are visually, there are definitely some differences. The N038W-1 is almost 2 months younger than his brothers. Birth weights vary as do the WW’s & YW’s. We feel the most important tool to help you decide is their EPD’s. This is a great example of why we take DNA on each animal and run it through the lab. For some traits it’s like having 10-25 progeny for accuracy as you can see it really separated them from BW to API. Without doing the DNA test, their EPD’s would have all read the same from parental averaging.

• ES N24J-1 is an ET calf and a product of a flush we purchased out of the Hooks June 24J cow who then goes back to 94F, the good Beacon cow at JC Simmentals. 24J is a Genesis daughter that John Miller selected to continue the next generation of 94F.

11

• His sire is the $100,000 Bridle Bit Recharge bull whose semen was expensive, so we only used it on certain cows, and we felt 24J was one of those cows. Unfortunately, we only got 2 calves, 1 heifer and the 2nd a bull who is here for your appraisal. • This guy is stout, thick and packed full of muscle and red meat and be sure to retain all the daughters here. Note that he does have a little blue eye on the left side from pink eye last fall.

• We’ve had some visitors to the farm looking at the bulls and I don’t think there has been anyone that has gone through the pen that hasn’t liked this bull. He is just flat out cool to look at. • He’s the kind that we are super proud to put the ES prefix on. He is so deep, so thick, so wide, yet extremely flexible on the move, these kind of bulls don’t come along every day. • He has a maternal sister, ES M15 (Lot 164) in the heifer division. I just saw her an hour ago when I went through the heifers as she’s on deck to calve and looks like a nice little udder coming. • He ratioed 105 for WW and 106 for YW and top 1% for REA. Overall he offers a nice set of EPD’s with 16 categories being in the top 50% of the breed or better.

• We’ll find out who the real cowboys are when this bull comes across the big screen on the front of the auction block. • NH39 weaned off big, ratioing 126 for WW and hasn’t let off the gas pedal since. He’s the #1 bull for PWG, WDA and Adj YW. Folks, I’m here to tell you with our management practices we don’t get 1500 YW’s but somehow he managed to break the barrier. Maybe he stands sideways at the bunk, I don’t know but he’s quite the specimen. • We sold a maternal sister in last year’s sale, and my notes stated her calf was growing like a weed and would outgrow his dam. So somehow this family has hard working cows that put it into their calves.

• These boys get us a little excited around here, they are not extreme in any one category, they are just dang good bulls. • We have two different flushes of King James sons in the offering and King James semen is not available anymore. Maybe that’s why we like them. • We purchased this package of embryos a couple of years ago to bring in some fresh bloodlines and except for Genesis on the top side, it’s a Tom Nelson cow on the bottom side that is probably an outcross for most. • I honestly don’t have a favorite of these 3 yet, as they all bring something to the table. We’ll see how they develop over the next month.

• Here’s a couple of real meat wagons out of the CLRS Jolene cow that sold as one of the fab five heifers in the Bred for Balance Sale in 2022. She was a heifer that we absolutely loved and tried to purchase her and come to Salem, but we came in 2nd that day. We did the next best thing and bought some embryos out of Jolene. That was two years ago and now you have the opportunity to share in our vision and enthusiasm. • Their sire, KBHR Revolution, is a son of the famous C4 cow and was purchased out of Keller Broken Heart in 2021 by Schooley and River Creek, where he has made a huge impact siring many bull prospects and now leaving them with an excellent group of females. • There are some similarities in these 2 studs as both are in the top 10-15% for Adj YW and PWG and both in the top 13 bulls for WDA. But there are also some differences as N1105J-1 (Lot 25) is a little more attractive and offers a little more calving ease, maternal and marbling, while the N1105J-2 (Lot 26) bull offers a little more WW and REA in his EPD profile. Any way you look at it, they are a great pair of bulls back by one of our favorite females.

• His dam, Dixie Doll, is a full sister to the mother of the good King James sons, Dawn Day and yes, he also originated just south of Wibaux, MT on the Nelson Livestock Ranch. • If you’ve been searching for something new and exciting in an outcross pedigree, I suggest you at least take the time to watch his video. • He’s a mid-sized bull that to really appreciate him you have to get

around and check out his back side. He’s got a top you could do dishes on and dinner for 4.

• You could go multiple directions with this bull with his performance, meat and muscle and TI, he could be a great terminal sire where they all are sold as feeders. Or better yet, keep his heifers back for replacements. He’s out of an excellent uddered Right Time daughter on the bottom and Ruby’s Linda cow family on the top. • His granddam is Alexis Ostrom’s Monique cow who found quite a bit of success in the show ring. I believe

Header

she may have even been Grand Champion female at the North American in Louisville.

• There are many reasons on paper why he should be on your short list March 6, but even if you solely select off visual appraisal, he’ll still be on that list.

• In our quest to bring in fresh genetics, led us to Ruby’s Quadrant, who sets the standard in many traits with WW, YW, MWW, Doc, REA and TI all being in the top 1% of the breed. • Not only does NK53 read well across his genomic profile, but he also looks to be a nice CE prospect as well for those who want their cake and eat it too. • His granddam, G82, has been doing a bang up job as well with a WW ratio of 107 on 5 calves.

• NG156 has a rear leg and foot structure that’s impeccable. He is in the top 15% of the breed for WW & YW. • Dam has been doing a wonderful job maternally, check out her daughter, ES M107 (Lot159) in the heifer division. She has a WW ratio of 106 on 5 calves. • His granddam was a tank of a cow that would stay fat on wind, water and weeds.

• A low-birth-weight bull that has excellent feet and leg structure, with a huge sweeping rib cage. • If a person was willing to push the calving ease a little he could go 4-star CE with some caution. Physically he has a lot of traits we look for in heifer bulls including his CE & BW EPD’s that put him in the top 5% and 15% of the breed. • Even if CE is not a main concern, there’s a ton of good in this bull.

• He’s a great fit for someone who wants a bull that’s not over the top in any one category but brings a lot of genetic value to the table. • We describe him as a nice profiling individual that has a lot of length of body, good level topline, and a lot of rib. • Quietman X IR Original, we had 3 IR Original daughters in our sale last year and had lots of comments how nice they were with perfect udders. • A Quiteman son was our 3rd high selling bull for $50,000 going to Hart Simmentals last year.

• I’d say this 1st calf heifer did a whale of a job with her 1st calf. Ratioed 114 for WW and 111 for YW. • Great choice for someone who wants as much bull performance wise as they can get, yet maintains a certain level of calving ease. • His granddam is a Cowboy Cut out of our A110 donor and you can’t go wrong having a splash of Cowboy Cut in the pedigree.
