Sea Lions... by Payton Guy Categorized in a group called pinniped, or “wing foot”, sea lions, seals, and walruses are very much alike, however they are also very much different. While walruses have elongated tusk-like teeth, seasl and sea lions do not. Seals maintain themselves on land by wiggling about, while sea lions are capable of supporting their weight to walk on their flippers. Characteristics and adaptations greatly differ between these, seemingly, similar mammals. Getting down to size, northern sea lions are the largest and the males generally are four times the size of females. Males appear to have a lion’s mane, though it’s just simply thick, short fur that surrounds the mammals neck to provide warmth. They range from many neutral, dull colors, to many places around the world, such as: California, Russia, and even Japan and Korea. They are loud, disruptive creatures, and just don’t care how much noise or ruckus they make. They’re opinionated, in a way, and just won’t hush up. On the other hand, sea lions are extremely fit, and rely heavily on their senses. Smell, taste, and sight, even though their eyes aren’t the greatest at catching light. Flippers not only stabilize them out of water, but help to regulate their body temperatures. Their skin and sleek body allow them to dive deep within the chilly waters, up to 600 feet. A sea lion’s diet consists of mainly fish and crab, because they are known carnivores. Just like humans, they use their back teeth, which are flat, to crush any shell and devour their meals easier. Recently, sea lions

have been feeding on endangered fish in the northwest region, which is causing quite a bit of disruption and worry.
