A Short History of Medicine:

Keeping the Garbage out of Friendships

“Doctor, I have an ear ache.”

It’s that time a year again. Summer is over and school is back in session. Most of you have been waiting all summer to get back into the classroom and participate in the newest STEM project or grammar lesson because after all, school is for learning, right? Okay, so maybe you are more excited about the people you will be seeing at school or the social learning that will take place, also known as friendships. Making friends in middle school can be difficult all on its own, but keeping friends in and past middle school can be nearly impossible. One study found that only 1% of friendships formed in middle school are still intact by 12th grade! (A) Researchers found that differences such as popularity, gender, preferred sports, and grades were among the biggest factors in determining whether a friendship lasted. (A) Change is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be the end of your friendships! Perhaps there’s more to this than what was studied? Oftentimes, friendships can become toxic when polluted with social garbage. Not sure if you have garbage in your friendships? Check out this list below 1. Dishonesty: If you or your friends aren’t honest with one another, there won’t be any trust and this is foundational to a lasting friendship. 2. Gossip/Hurtful Words : If you or your friends make a habit of talking poorly about others, it will only be a matter of time before you or your friend begin talking poorly about each other. Sometimes it happens because you are angry or hurt or just feel pressured to join in with others. Whatever the case, it will destroy the friendship as well as the trust. If you do slip up and say or do something hurtful, just go to your friend and be the first to tell on yourself and apologize. This will help keep the trust intact. 3. Jealousy: I f you or your friend is jealous about time spent with other friends, this will most certainly lead one or both of you to start trying to control who hangs out with whom and when. If you are feeling insecure about your friendship, be honest about it. Most of the time, there’s no need to worry and when you tell on your worry out loud, it helps to take the power out it. Besides, spending too much time together can be dangerous to the friendship so it’s good to take frequent breaks and hang out with other people too! Feel free to write in and add your own as well. Take a risk and be among the few to have a friendship to last you thru high school and beyond! A: http://www.teenvogue.com/story/middle-school-friendships-dont-last- study
