restaurants. Having chosen that latter option, what do you feel are the advantages and disadvantages of owning your own place? Having it your way! You don’t have to answer to a big corporation who more than likely does not know what your community needs and wants. We are not a cookie cutter business; we remain flexible to meet our customers’ needs. What is the best part of your job? Seeing a business develop from an idea into a reality. I started out with my first restaurant in 1998 named for my oldest son, Dalton’s. After seven years of a family operated restaurant, I found a growing opportunity to expand our philosophy to additional locations. What I really love is the ability to recognize talent and promote our employees within. What is the worst part of your job? When I see young people not taking their job seriously, it makes me sad that they are missing a huge opportunity to learn. 1/3 of businesses that close their doors do so while they’re still profitable; owners often want out because the pressure and the toll on their family life is too great. In fact, a study has shown that a restaurant owner’s ability
to give his business adequate attention while balancing the needs of his family is a more important factor in success than even location. So what’s the work/family/life balance like for you? In the early years, I worked night and day until I discovered that I was micro managing. After 20 years, I have learned to trust my team and provide them with the tools to become successful! Do you hire teenagers to work in your restaurants? We sure do! We look for go- getters who listen and trust the process and do not take short cuts. They become part of our restaurant family! Any other advice and tips you’d like to share with the kids? Always do your best and enjoy being a kid! You have a lifetime ahead of you. Be open to constructive criticism as it will help you form character and strength. Learn how to be part of a team to work together!
Halloween began as Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival. At the end of summer Celts thought that the barrier between our world and that of the dead got very thin, allowing for ghosts, monsters, and other creatures to get through. To protect themselves, Celts would dance around a huge bonfire with animal heads on to try and scare away the creatures. Samhain later became All Hallows’ Eve which took place on October 31, the day before All Saints’ Day. When All Hallows’ Eve came to America and became known as Halloween, it was mainly popular in Maryland and the southern colonies. Our Halloween is vastly different than the original All Hallows’ Eve because we changed due to influences from the American Indians and different European Groups. Out of these influences came “play parties” which celebrated the harvest while neighbors would sing, dance, tell each other’s fortunes, and even tell stories of the dead!
