Holidays & Celebrations

FEBRUARY 13th Many historians believe that the first American Mardi Gras took place on March 3, 1699, when the French explorers Iberville and Bienville landed in what is now Louisiana, just south of the holiday’s future epicenter: New Orleans. They held a small celebration and dubbed the spot Point du Mardi Gras. Bienville went on to found the settlement of Mobile, Alabama in 1702 as the first capital of French Louisiana. In 1703 French settlers in Mobile established the first organized Mardi Gras celebration tradition in what was to become the United States. Despite the holiday’s rich history in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mayor Sam Jones of Mobile, Alabama, says the first Mardi Gras celebration in this country actually took place in his city, and most Mobile natives agree.

FEBRUARY Black History Month is a holiday which is celebrated every February in the U.S., Canada, and in October in the U.K. It’s an important month for remembering important people, events and achievements of African Americans. In the U.S., it is also known also as African- American History Month, but in Canada and the United Kingdom, it is known simply as Black History Month.

MARCH 2ND In May 1997, a small reading task force at National Education Association (NEA) came up with a big idea. “Let’s create a day to celebrate reading! We will celebrate it on Dr. Seuss’s birthday.” And so was born on March 2, 1998, the largest celebration of reading this country has ever seen. Read Across America will be March 2nd 2018!

JANUARY 18th Did you know that Jan.18 has long been observed as Winnie the Pooh Day? The day is celebrated because it’s the birthdate of A.A. Milne in 1882. Milne is the creator/author of Winnie the Pooh, including all of his friends: Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Piglet, Owl, Kanga and Roo and Tigger, too! Another trivia fact for you: The A.A. stands for Allan Alexander. Winnie the Pooh eats a lot of HONEY! See pg 18 for Honey Joys...

Dr. Martin Luther King Day is January 15, 2018.

AA MILNE by Haley of Team Newsies AA MILNE was born on January 18, 1882 and died

on January 31, 1956. AA Milne is well known for Winnie The Pooh. He published another book, the house at Pooh Corner. Winnie was originally published October 12, 1926. Pooh was named after AA Milne’s son’s stuffed bear named Winnie and the name Pooh came from a swan. You know the little Boy Christopher? He was named after Christopher Robin Milne, AA Milne’s son. One of AA Milne famous quotes is: “Promise me you’ll always remember. You’re braver than you believe and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”
