WINTER OLYMPICS 2018 The 2018 Winter Olympic Games will be played in South Korea

According to legend,The Olympics even though they originated in 776 B.C. the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. The Olympics were first held as part of a religious festival that praised Zeus, the father of the Greek gods and goddesses. Coinciding with the modern Olympics games the Winter Olympics are a key part of the athletic celebration. The games in the Winter Olympics include: alpine skiing, bobsleigh, cross country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, luge, snowboarding and many more! The Olympic Winter Games formally began in Chamonix, although they were originally known as the “Semaine internationale des sports d’hiver”. Which is French for International Sports Week. This year the Winter Olympics will be held on February 9th, approximately 50 miles away from North Korea. This could make our U.S. teams feel slightly threatened. Will our teams be in danger of attacks made by the communist state of North Korea? Extra security is in place to ease the minds of the people due to the missile launch attempts. Even though security measures are in place, will the players be able to perform as well under the extra pressure? We shall see...

Let’s Play Winter Sports

The winter brings many fun activities to do outdoors. As we enjoy the Winter Olympics this February watching and cheering for our favorite athlete and sport, there are some outdoor sports that are similar to those in the Olympics that you can get in on the action right at home such as:

When participating in any of these fun outdoor sports, it is always important to get the right equipment to stay safe. As in any outdoor, winter sport, staying warm and dry is also extremely important. Be sure to wear layers of clothing and keep as much of your body covered as possible. While you may feel like you’re not thirsty, you still need to take water breaks to stay hydrated. You are still perspiring under all of those clothes – you just can’t feel it. Ice Hockey involves elbow pads, gloves, a helmet, a puck, shin guards, shoulder pads, skates, a stick and a visor. Ice Skiing requires the right boots, gloves, goggles, helmet, poles and skis.

•Alpine skiing •Cross country skiing

•Freestyle skiing •Snowboarding •Ice hockey

•Figure skating •Speed skating •Bobsleighing

It’s also fun to enjoy and participate in some of the sports at home like skiing, ice skating, sledding, and ice hockey.

A Camel Spin in Ice Skating is a spin on one leg with the non-skating or free leg extended parallel to the ice and the upper body pitched forward, arms extended.

In Ice Hockey, A Face-off
is when the puck is dropped between two opposing players who face each other. Face-offs occur at the beginning of each period and after any stoppage of play.

Relaying in Speed Skating is when the following team-mate is already skating in the inner zone before being touched from behind. Timing is essential.
