It is thought that littering began when people started to invent plastic things. Littering as we know it today probably increased after the industrial revolution, when people began living in greater concentrations in the cities and waste management became a problem. However the problem of people leaving rubbish in the street is an old one. In 1515 - Strafford-upon-Avon court record show that Shakespeare’s father was fined for depositing filth in a public street. Here is an excerpt from the British Quarterly Review 1873.
