Who are coalition members? Community coalition members are parents, teachers, law enforcement, businesses, religious leaders, health providers and other community activists who are mobilizing at the local level to make their communities safer, healthier and drug-free. Coalitions are partnerships of the many sectors of a community which gather together collaboratively to solve the community’s problems and guide the community’s future. When they are driven by citizen identified issues, citizens become involved in all steps of the problem solving process. How do coalitions make a difference in communities?? Coalition building is a smart strategy that promotes coordination and collaboration and makes efficient use of limited community resources. By connecting multiple sectors of the community in a comprehensive approach, community coalitions are achieving real outcomes. Join us the 4th Monday monthly meeting at Community Bank & Trust, Ashland City, 6:00-7:00 The mission of the Cheatham County Community Enhancement Coalition is to educate and promote community involvement in reducing alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse and other health issues in Cheatham County. In case you didn’t figure it out, these are generally well known names who are considered to be successful in their field. Oftentimes, people reference them and talk about how “lucky” they are to be in the position they’re in. Luck is defined as “the force that seems to operate for good or ill in a person’s life, as in shaping circumstances, events and opportunities.” (A) Some consider the following to be a result of luck: the place you were born, the genes you received, when you were born, and the infamous winning the lottery. Let’s explore the lottery for instance. Experts say that, on average, the chances of winning millions playing the lottery is 1/12,271,512. (B) These same experts say that you are four times likely to be struck by lightning. (B) It seems like “luck” could be a risky thing on which to base one’s future in order to find success. On another thought, what if it’s not luck at all? What if there’s another force at work? What if that force is actually work itself? This is where skill comes into play. Skill is defined as “the ability, coming from one’s knowledge, practice, experience, etc., to do something well”. (C) Refer back to the list above and notice that each of those individuals has a particular skill set that has enabled him or her to stand out above the rest. Infamous coach John Wooden was the head coach at UCLA and won 10 NCAA National Championships in a 12-year period, including an unprecedented 7 in a row. (D) Wooden said: “It takes time to create excellence. If it could be done quickly, more people would do it.” (D) Are you still not convinced that it’s skill and not talent or luck that builds success? Let’s consider Kevin Durant, who has been selected to seven All- NBA teams and eight NBA All-Star teams. (E) When it comes to talent, Durant said; “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” (E) He added, “I know that hard work got me here. And the day I stop working hard, this can all go away.” (E) Lastly, take this article for example. It’s not being written by one who enjoys writing or one who is “ lucky ” to be able to write well. To the contrary, this article and many others are being written by one who knows that writing is a skill set that must be continually developed over years especially if one hopes to write a book one day. Remember that luck can be fleeting and momentary while skill requires time, applied effort, and fine tuning. Luck may show up every now and again, but it has nothing to offer long term; however, skill is something to be built and crafted. It’s always there for the taking and it will leave you with a sense of pride and accomplishment for years to come.
