A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

This week we have had a fabulous sports day and enjoyed a respite from the very hot weather with the vast majority of students participating in a variety of events from the 100m sprint to the egg and spoon race. It was a great opportunity to get together as a school and support each other. It was wonderful seeing the students enjoying themselves and mingling amongst their year groups in their house colours and teams. I even participated myself in the staff relay race for ‘Team Science’ where we were very narrowly beaten for 1st place by the PE team! It was a great event and we can’t wait to see all the pictures in the school magazine at the end of the term.

Our first group have now successfully completed their assessed DofE expedition and both teachers and students enjoyed a great weekend camping in the beautiful weather. The other two cohorts are set to go on their assessed expeditions next weekend.

Next week on Tuesday a group of selected students will be attending the livery careers fair in central London. Despite Wednesday 5 July being a strike day our planned Drop Down Day trips for Year 9 will still be going ahead. You will receive an email with further details about your child’s specific trip. We ask that all students are in their full school uniform, wear comfortable black shoes and bring a packed lunch. Please make sure they have their travel cards so we can use public transport. If it is hot they should bring water and a hat.

Please note that there is planned industrial action next Wednesday 5 July and Friday 7 July. Please check previous letters to see how each year group will be affected on these days.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Killing God by Kevin Brooks Age recommendation 14+

The book features Dawn Bundy, a fifteen year old girl whose father claims to have found God, and leaves to continue his new, alternative lifestyle. The reader is led on an adventure with Dawn, which involves the struggles of friends and classmates. Kevin Brooks somehow manages to convey how young girls may feel about their bodies - specifically body dysmorphia - and describes their discomfort in their own skin. This book - to me - is very important. Killing God highlights many modern day problems for young people. It educates people and serves as a warning. ~ Recommended by Imogen C-A, Year 9 student
