Theistic Evolution

h P rme> B ook OF HYMNS AND CHORUSES

W hen the theory of evolution, with its purely naturalistic explana tions for living things, was first presented it did not find a ready ac ceptance in Christian circles. The Christian was persuaded that God was responsible for the variety of living things that we find in our world to day. However, after the first skir mishes with the evolutionist subsided it became more and more popular for some in the Christian church to think in terms of evolution as God’s method of creation. This gave rise to the theory of theistic evolution which was accepted by many in the liberal branch of the church as well as a few sound fundamental believers. Although there are probably many modifications of this theory, general ly a theistic evolutionist could be described as one who holds that what the evolutionist has to say about evo lution is true. However, he believes God is back of the whole process, directing it according to the princi ples suggested by the evolutionist. While theistic evolution is held by many, most of those who hold the Bible as a unique revelation still be lieve that God has brought living things into existence by creation. Although some may feel that the istic evolution is an adequate explan ation for the origin of living crea tures the evolutionist is not one of them. For the evolutionist is attempt ing to explain the whole panorama of life by the operation of natural law alone. He knows nothing of a God-directing force. In fact he has made every attempt to resist any di recting influence in evolution wheth- "A PRIEST SPEAKS HIS MIND" By Rev. W. E. O'Gorman j i Why he returned to Protestantism after • $ 30 years. er it be God or some other more vaguely defined force. Such suggested directing principles he feels are not justified by the evidence and cannot be accepted since they do not lend themselves to experimental verifica tion. Thus if a person turns to the istic evolution in apt attempt to pla cate science he in reality finds him self in no better position than the creationist because both explanations require something that the scientist cannot measure. Not only is theistic evolution an inadequate theory as far as scientific acceptance is concerned, it is also un satisfactory because it has to suffer with all of the inadequacies of the evolutionary theory itself. Total evo lution is not a proven fact. It is still only a working hypothesis which has not succeeded in explaining many observations of science. Such things as the gaps in the fossil record and the lack of an adequate mechanism are examples of difficulties that the theistic evolutionist has in common with the organic evolutionist. Thus we see that the theistic evo lutionist, in reality,- is in a vague no-man’s-land between those who be lieve in a creature-creating God and those who have a purely mechan istic explanation for living things. He is not accepted by either and in addition is saddled with problems of the e v o lu tion is t. The creationist, while he is no more accepted by the organic evolutionist, still has a distinct advantage over the theistic evolutionist in that he has a divine explanation for the problems that evolution has not solved.
