Object Lessons continued band around them. The sponge can be blackened with ink. Allow the ink to dry before using.) LESSON: These two bundles of matches are like people. One is like Christians and the other like unsaved people. You cannot always tell Christians by their looks but you can usually tell by their actions. Before trying to de cide which of these bundles is like Christians and which is like the un saved, let us recall the words of John, “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us:

(Print the word “ Christ” in the heart, using lemon juice or 10 drops of sul phuric acid diluted with 25 drops of water! Stir a piece of starch the size of a small bean into four tablespoon fuls of water. Boil until the mixture is clear. Cool and add four drops of iodine. The liquid should be a light blue. Add enough cold water to make it thin enough to write. With this substance as ink, print with a sharp stick the word “ Self.” ) LESSON: This heart is filled with self. Everything it does is for self. It re minds me of many people who are very selfish. We wonder how selfish people can ever be changed, but God knows just the way by which they can be made to do less for themselves and more for others. When we let this hot bulb, repre senting hard trials, shine into this heart, we find that “ Self” is leaving and another word is appearing. The word is “ Christ.” It is this way in life. It often takes some great trial or testing before a Christian’s friends can see in his life Christ and not self. He then becomes more kind and thoughtful of others. This heart reminds me of Joseph and his treatment of his brothers when they came down to Egypt for

and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16). I will take off the rubber band which binds this first bundle together and see what happens. The matches separate immediately. Look! This black sponge of hate causes them to separate. What kind of people do you think they represent? “Unsaved people.” Yes, unsaved people often seek to get away from each other as soon as possible and want to go their own separate ways. We will take the rubber band off the other bundle. These matches cling together tightly. No black sponge of hatred causes them to separate. Chris tians who have fellowship with Christ are held together by love. When peo ple of the world see Christians who have love for each other, they realize that they are disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. The story of Judah in Genesis gives us a beautiful example of brotherly love. He was willing to be kept in Egypt in order that his brother Ben iamin might be allowed to return to their father, Jacob.

food. Joseph had suffered a great deal and had been tested. He had been a slave and a prisoner for years. God let Joseph go through great trials, but “ the Lord was with Joseph” in all of his troubles and later made him rich and powerful. If Joseph’s brothers had come to him before he had been tried and tested, he might have been angry be cause of their unkind treatment of him, and he might have treated them in a like manner. But now he was not thinking of himself and he for gave them. God had planned it just right. END.
