Local Authorities and Sustainable Peatland Management: Current Opportunities and Future Possibilities for Local Approaches

Natural Resources Wales is the leading organisation for SPM in Wales and supports peatland action in local authorities by:

• Providing key data such as the Peatland Wales map to feed into the statutory and policy processes of local authorities that may support SPM as outlined in this report. • Providing expertise and guidance on SPM and peatland restoration and working in partnership on peatland action projects such as the Lost Peatlands project. • Providing funding for peatland restoration work through the NPAP programme. NRW is also a key partner on PSBs and develops Area Statements. The way local authorities can work with NRW through PSBs and Area Statements is outlined in detail below. Beyond this, local authorities also already work closely with NRW in protecting biodiversity and ecosystems resilience through land use planning and designated species and sites. These relationships will be important in exchanging knowledge to contribute to policy and action on SPM at a local level, especially as it is relates to developing resilient ecological networks. National Parks There are three National Parks in Wales, E r yri (Snowdonia), Bannau Br y cheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and Pembrokeshire National Park. Significant areas of upland peatlands exist in Eyri and Bannau Brecheiniog. National Parks, like local authorities, are creatures of statute. They are currently designated for their natural beauty (including wildlife and culture) and the opportunities they provide for recreation. A National Park Authority (NPA) is established for
