Local Authorities and Sustainable Peatland Management: Current Opportunities and Future Possibilities for Local Approaches

Mechanisms for regional and local partnership working that might support SPM at a local level. There are a number of statutory and non-statutory mechanisms for joint working between local authorities and between local authorities and other organisations that might be used to support SPM. These exist at both the local and regional level.

The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 creates a framework for collaboration between public authorities in Wales to help deliver wellbeing objectives at a local level. Given the relevance of SPM to all the wellbeing goals (see Figure 2) this has the potential to be an important mechanism in this respect. SPM can be particularly significant in this local context because whilst some environmental challenges, such as climate change, can seem very far removed from the day to day lives of local communities, SPM focuses attention on natural assets on the doorstep.
