BoardConverting Serving the North American Corrugated and Folding Carton Industries for 40 years January 6, 2025 VOL. 41, NO. 1

Converter Outlook, 2025: Part I Election Results Breed Optimism BY SUSAN RILEY Each year, Board Converting News asks some of North America’s lead- ing independent converters to share their outlooks on their business and the corrugated and folding carton industry as we embark on a new year. They will continue, as always, to invest in new technologies and their people to grow their business. Though the impact of increased containerboard prices and potential tariffs are a concern, converters are largely optimistic about 2025 and the opportunities it could offer under a new presidential regime. ACME CORRUGATED BOX CO. Hatboro, Pennsylvania: Bob Cohen reports, “I know many of us in the business community were happy about the election results. Psycho- logically, it sets the tone for the business climate for 2025 and beyond. “I vote as an Independent, but I see myself as a pragmatist and trim- ming waste and regulations would seem to clear the way for a business resurgence across all sectors. Energy abundance, and the willingness to develop all forms of energy will surely propel investment and reallo- cation of capital. I think the American people have spoken. They want out of the inflationary and wasteful policies of a government grown too large. Government, if operated on a for profit basis, would have failed

BCN Recaps Mergers, Acquisitions Of 2024

It was another eventful year in the world of mergers, consolidations and acquisitions af- fecting the corrugated packaging industry. Board Converting News made sure you didn't miss a thing as we provided the latest news in our ever-evolving world. Here is a recap of some of the highlights of 2024: January: Miami, Florida based Atlas Pack- aging & Displays Inc., acquired Republic Pack- aging of Florida in Miami. Atlanta, Georgia based Hood Container Corporation acquired Sumter Packaging Cor- poration of Sumter, South Carolina. February: Falconer, New York based Jamestown Container Companies acquired Midwest Box Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Newtown Square, Pennsylvania based SupplyOne, Inc. acquired Bacon & Graham of Paterson, New Jersey. March: Atlanta, Georgia based Veritiv Cor- poration acquired Vivabox Solutions. April: Memphis, Tennessee based Interna- tional Paper (IP) and London, England based DS Smith reached an agreement on the terms of an all-share combination. long ago. I am hopeful that the current mind set of reigning in government excess (spending) is not derailed by politics as usual. “For the containerboard and box industry, this change in administration should bode well for the coming year. For independents, the future looks particularly bright. The consolidations that have occurred, or will soon occur, will work to the benefit of independent converters nationwide.

Regional business is extremely sensitive about how their supply re- quirements are managed. Frankly, bigness is no panacea. The truth is that no matter what the mutterings from the board rooms of the major producers, the individual box plants must perform. So, while Wall Street may applaud consolidation, the ultimate box consumer may see things quite differently. “I would hope that 2025 will see major changes in the way the pric- ing of containerboard is implemented. The present process is archaic, opaque, and extremely flawed. It is ludicrous that a 45+ billion-dollar industry waits for permission to raise prices (or to lower them). To the CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

Pizza Hut, Smurfit Westrock Team Up To Promote Pizza Box Recycling Plano, Texas based Pizza Hut, LLC announced a partner- ship with Smurfit Westrock, one of the brand’s primary pizza box suppliers, to raise awareness with customers in Louisville, Kentucky that their pizza boxes can be recycled. With confusion often surrounding this topic, research conducted by Smurfit Westrock in recent years has prov- en that pizza boxes can be recycled, grease and all, when infrastructure in local communities allows. It is estimated that nearly 75 percent of people in the US have access to recycling for used pizza boxes in their communities. “At Pizza Hut, we’ve always been focused on giving our customers the best pizza possible and an important part of the experience is the pizza box,” said Emily True, the glob- al senior manager of sustainability at the brand. “Once our customers are done enjoying their pizza, we want them to understand how they can play an important role in making sure boxes get a second life.” Pizza Hut has a history of working to make its pizza box more sustainable and primarily uses corrugated card- board, a widely recyclable material. Of the cardboard used in the brands’ pizza boxes in the US, at least 35 percent is made of recycled content. Pizza Hut is also taking on this issue through consumer education and working with groups that influence local governments and municipali-

ties on the recyclability of cardboard pizza boxes. As one of the largest producers of pizza boxes in the US, Smurfit Westrock is committed to circularity in pack- aging, which it achieves in part by returning and recycling used corrugated material into the packaging production cycle. More than 3 billion pizza boxes are consumed annu- ally in the US. But achieving this goal requires partnership,

and Pizza Hut says it can help reach consumers. For local recycling guidelines, go to recycling.pizzahut.com . “Recycling corrugated material is a fairly simple, straightforward process that contributes to improving cir- cularity in packaging,” said Kevin Hudson, senior vice pres- ident of Forestry and Recycled Fiber at Smurfit Westrock North America. “Awareness is a critical first step, but sus- tainable results can only be achieved when consumers, manufacturers, brands and communities work collectively to recycle pizza boxes, and we’re grateful for the opportu- nity to work with Pizza Hut, haulers and local municipalities to improve circularity in the Louisville market.”

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

buyer it seems ridiculous that the industry needs the pres- ently accepted publication’s consent to change pricing. It leads to unpredictability and confusion. Are prices raised due to demand or due to increasing input costs, and, if so, what does that have to do with demand? Does the change in containerboard pricing cover other input costs associ- ated with running our businesses? It seems to me that the answer should lie with another approach to market pric- ing. I see the box market as a far more competitive market than Containerboard. Why should that be? To me Kraft Li- nerboard is a completely artificial market as evidenced by the prices that the kraft producers charge in foreign mar- kets. If more Kraft Linerboard is produced in Europe and South America, will those currently exported tons (from US Producers) need to be sold in the domestic market? May- be then Kraft Linerboard prices will be market driven with prices based on Market necessity. The foundation for Kraft Linerboard will remain unstable and probably unsustain- able. The changes make it even more important to support Ryan Fox’s efforts to more accurately predict real pricing movements and his more precise methodology. “For Acme, the year 2024 has been a transitional year. Following a major expansion, on the heels of the Pandem- ic, we have found the benefits in the deployment of the latest technology in box plant automation. We have added significant converting capacity in 2024 and that will con- tinue into 2025. We remain busy and our backlog for the beginning of the year is robust. “The pending price increase seems to be ill-timed, but I think it would be naïve to think that something won’t be recognized by the end of the first quarter. While RISI has cut back on their prediction of box demand, I think inde- pendents, like us, will increase sales well beyond the cau- tious forecast they have announced. I see 2025 as a year of opportunity. I remain optimistic about our prospects, and those of other independents who have a passion for their business and are in tune with the pulse of their re- spective markets. BAY CITIES Pico Rivera, California: Greg Tucker reports, “This year will be a defining year for the box business. I personally felt we would be out of our box recession at the end of summer, we would have gotten through the holidays rocking and rolling and back to a typical seasonal slow start in the first quarter of next year then launch into a more stable bal- ance of around 1-2 percent growth. The box business for most has been just ho hum for some time now. “Oddly enough, the advent of Donald Trump coming back into office meant that some companies are hedging their bets against tariffs, buying and filling up warehous- es again, with stuff, to temporarily avoid the hit of tariffs. What is the freight industry telling us? Are we poised for a giant rebound in our economy or are we just moving more CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

stuff temporarily into warehouses to hedge our bets? This messed with my predictions and moved it out a bit into the second quarter of next year. I have to explain what has

taken place in our world and in our domestic economy to help justify my thoughts. “We have switched from a stuff economy back to a services econ- omy a few years back. The words stocking, restocking and destocking came into vogue. I thought stocking was a description of a creep hang-

ing around dark corners at night following people. But no, today it’s filling and refilling boxes from inventory chang- es. Hey, at least we got a new word in the box vocabu- lary, kind of like regular slotted container. The US stocked up on stuff because we had a ton of stimulus given out during Covid and as we sat home with not much to do, we bought up everything we could to make life more pleasur- able at home. Supply chains got way out of control then Joe Biden declared Covid was over, and we immediately transitioned from stuff to services. Thus, the Golden Years of Boxes came to a halt and our box business went into its recession. We lead economies into recessions, and we drive them out of recession. “Soon after, Biden got Congress to pass the Infrastruc- ture Bill and of course the Chips and Dips Act again stim- ulating an overheated economy for the cause of a new all electric US and bringing chip manufacturing back to the states. Let’s recall a few days after his inauguration Biden stepped on the neck of the oil industry and Mr. Putin with his 70,000 troops on the border of Ukraine invaded that country thinking that if Russia is supplying Europe with oil and gas there would be no one to stop this invasion. Iran flush with fresh cash from Biden lifting all of the prior sanc- tions armed all of its proxies across the middle east name- ly Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis all being distributed right through Syria. Funny how all of Iran’s proxies start with the letter H! “At the same time inflation in the US became uncontrol- lable. The Fed thought inflation was transitory and finally woke up and raised the heck out of interest rates fast and furious. This run up in inflation clobbered the lower and middle class of America. Groceries, gas and rent prices flew off the Richter scale. Our box industry entered its re- cession during that time. People making over $100,000 a year in America were doing fine. They were able to prop up the economy by buying goods and services at the same time their stock portfolio jumped up around 25 percent in the last two years. All of this escalation in our broader economy took place while the lower- and middle-income people in the US were hurting. “America started waking up to what was really taking place in the economy (the real economy) and Biden was CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

pushed aside midstream during his Presidential campaign and was replaced by you know who. She blew through 1.5 billion dollars in campaign money donated by the Demo- cratic elites who have conned the lower and middle class by buying their votes with money that went nowhere and padded their influence with mostly each other. Their law- fare system against Trump was weakening and Americans began to see through the leaderless Democratic party’s candidate and her offerings. Mr. Trump became our Pres- ident elect. I thought there would be riots in the streets from the liberal loons who too, bought into the give it away politicians. However, mostly, all is calm on the western front (we still have Nancy’s nephew in the Peoples Repub- lic of California). Mr. Trump is moving on building his own administration made up of his picks and not the picks of the political machine that tried to run him last time. There is no Russian hoax to warp the minds of Americans and for once we have a leader that seemingly many on all sides are getting behind. “During the last two years a very interesting case study in government rule and economic recourse was taking place in South America. Javier Milei became the President of Argentina and vowed to stem government spending by axing many of his government’s bureaucracies. He actual- ly reduced inflation from 28 percent to 2.5 percent in just about one year. He stabilized his currency and created a surplus in his economy. This is to me what we need to see in America. Many Americans began to take notice, notably President elect Donald Trump. He enlisted two very smart and self-made wealthy billionaires to head (DOGE) Depart- ment of Government Efficiency to trim the giant fat in our federal government. There will be a tremendous amount of push back with the DOGE brothers in that politicians left, right in the middle don’t like their stuff cut. “However, if we simply learn to utilize cutting edge pro- cesses to reduce the way we buy goods and services in this country we can trim the fat exceptionally. Rather than buying votes we just might be able to pay down debt! Add that to mass reductions of regulations that will enhance new businesses plus the decrease in business taxes will give us one heck of a punch to our economy. When done correctly, there will be no stopping this economy. We will see real growth, real wage increases, real employment (jobs that produce a real good or service) once all of these steps are enacted. “Something else we will see, is an immediate reduction and elimination of senseless wars. With the weapon trade route from Iran to its proxies shut down due to Syria fall- ing, the Triple H will be powerless, as will Iran. Isreal will look for a cease fire towards the end of January in Gaza, Hezbollah is failing, if not toast, and the Houthis will get their due share very soon. “Mr. Putin and his shabby military will leave Ukraine after a very interesting negotiation and for the most part CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

Iran is rendered useless. The US and the rest of the world will not allow Iran to continue to build a nuclear bomb. Hence all of the previous sanctions will be turned back on. Strength in America will be restored and needless wars from absent minded leaders will be a thing of the past. “Things will be bumpy for the first few months of next year. That blip in pre-tariff inventory building will be a flash in the pan. The might of America will be again produc- ing goods and services which lead to non-discretionary products that require our most favored product, Mr. Box. J P Morgan is predicting global GDP of 5.2 percent. That means we should see around 2.5 percent in the US, and we will be poised for growth more so in the second quar- ter. Retail sales in November were up .07 percent and an- nually retail sales was 7.9 percent. I think we will see total retail sales around 9 percent for the year. “Remember 70 percent of our economy is the consum- er spending money. 2025 will be a big one for the motion picture industry that has a bunch of blockbuster movies in the can lined up for release into and through next year. “Most don’t realize the effect that has on purchas- es of apparel, toys and electronics all branded with that next movie action figure or favorite cartoon. Retail will be looking to attract the consumer again and get her into the store. Movies do just that. How can mom say no to her screaming kids looking for that next new thing? Even Doug McMillon, CEO of Walmart, is stressing the importance of creating that instore experience to bring the consumer into his stores and enjoy that moment of escape ultimately to buy products. “Many retail environments have succumbed to creating just a world of products with price tags. Now we need a guiding light to drive our consumer towards these prod- ucts. Remember we only have three seconds to get her to notice something in store, pick it up and put it in her cart. I see more emphasis on bright and colorful retail packaging and more eye-popping displays at retail driving sales. This is a requirement to compliment the other 20 percent of retail now bought online and growing. “This will be a big year at retail onshelf and online. On- line packaging will have to morph into bringing back that experience or feeling at purchase when delivered home by recreating that experience with enticing graphics out- side and inside the box. Amazon’s SIOC (Ship In Own Con- tainer) now SIPP (Ships In Product Packaging) will drive that experience. That is of course, if the porch pirates don’t steal all the good stuff because they can identify it clearly. Still, the package is the product on shelf and online! “So how do we prepare for this next new normal (again) of steady growth in the box business? I believe as always, invest in training. The moment to sharpen the saw with our employees at every level is right now. Yea, you too could read a book. “Change will be greatly happening in our industry. We
