The Firs, August 18-25

B Y A L T H E A S . M I L L E R “Look at those shoes, Mama. They cost $10.95 and half the shoes are gone. Ladies get ‘gyped’ when they buy shoes.” This bit of wisdom emanated from the youngest Miller as he window- shopped with Gram and Mother. “Why do ladies pay so much for so little? Men and boys get a lot more for their money.” “ I suppose the reason for this state of affairs is because women are con cerned about whether they are stylish in their attire. The people who design this type of shoe announce, in affect, that if you want to be in style, wear these shoes.” “Well, all I have to say is I’m glad I’m not a lady.” . As Mother pondered the subject which perplexed Mark, her mind went to another question. Why will men virtually sell their souls to “ en joy the pleasures of sin for a season” (Heb. 11:25)? Can some of the answer be found in the desire for conformity? How often it has been said, even by be lievers in Christ who should both know and do better, “It’s the style. ‘They’ are all doing it.” Before we become conformed to the pattern of this world’s thinking we do well to consider the price of that dubious pleasure. Dear son of mine, may you ever be able to discern the profound dif ference between conformity to God’s express will for His own and the conformity which leads to enslave ment to this world system. When you have no other purpose than that “ they,” the world, are all doing it, pull yourself up short and STOP. It is possible this “ style,” this behavior or this work will not honor your Lord. If it cannot, then it is unworthy in the life of God’s child. There is but one conformity which means life to men. “And be not con formed to this world . . .” (Romans 12:2), but be assured that “ . . . all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose . . . to be conformed to the image of his Son . . . (Romans 8:28, 29).
