Alabama Department of Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield will step down at the end of the year after serving in the post for 12 years. “Throughout my time as governor, we have proudly solidified Alabama as a top state for doing business, and no doubt, Greg has been a key part of that success. Together, we have secured more than $42 billion in new investments in our state, which has created 78,000 good-paying jobs,” said Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. “Greg will go down as one of Alabama’s best economic development heads, and he will be noted for projects like Mazda Toyota and credited for branding the Made in Alabama name worldwide. I will forever be grateful for all that Greg has accomplished for our state, and I know he will continue having great success in his career," she added. Governor Ivey has already named his replacement as she has tapped Ellen McNair, an economic development veteran, to serve as the state's next Secretary of Commerce. “I have known Ellen since my days at the Alabama Development Office, and I know she will be of tremendous value to the state of Alabama. She sees past just the investment and jobs numbers and knows that these results are changing the lives of Alabama families,” said Governor Ivey. McNair, who is taking the helm in the new year, is currently chief economic development officer with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. Throughout McNair’s tenure at the Chamber, she has successfully worked on almost 600 national and international projects with a capital investment of over $8 billion, resulting in almost 30,000 new jobs for the Montgomery community. Clinical experts say it’s safe to get both the flu and COVID shots at the same appointment and the vaccines will be effective in boosting your immune system. Short- term side effects may include soreness at the injection site, headaches, fatigue or fever, but they should pass quickly. Ellen McNair Named Secretary of Commerce To protect yourself and those you love when respiratory viruses are circulating this fall and winter, getting vaccinated against both the flu and COVID-19 will be important. Individuals who are age 60 or older may also need to get vaccinated against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). These three viral, respiratory illnesses are active this year and hospital admissions for COVID are already starting to increase around the country. In Etowah County, Gadsden Regional Medical Center has already begun seeing more people who need inpatient care for their COVID-19 symptoms. Across our state, the numbers of new COVID-19 hospital admissions were 4.51 per 100,000 in early October. Gadsden Regional Medical Center is encouraging community members to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation that everyone six months or older get both flu and updated COVID shots this year to bolster immune defenses as the weather turns colder. “Vaccinations stimulate the body’s immune system to minimize your chances of developing a severe illness that requires hospitalization,” said Jonathan Mikhail, M.D., family practice physician with Gadsden Family Practice. “In addition to helping ourselves, immunization can also slow the spread of viruses to the more vulnerable members of our community.” Those at the highest risk of serious illness from flu or COVID include babies and toddlers, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. People ages 60 years and older should talk to their healthcare provider about whether RSV vaccination is right for them as well. Older adults, as well as adults with chronic heart or lung disease, with weakened immune systems or living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities are at the highest risk for RSV illness. Dr. Mikhail continues, “Anyone can get sick from a respiratory virus but vaccination and preventive actions such as avoiding close contact with people who are sick, covering your coughs and sneezes and frequent hand- washing with soap and water are the best steps you can take to minimize your risk.” As for when to get your shots, those who are in a high risk group or who have not had COVID in the last two months can get vaccinated right away. If you plan to travel for the holidays, you might push your vaccination out to late October or early November to maximize the period in which the induced protection is still high. By Brandon K. Pierce Alabama Ledger DeKalb County Authorities have arrested three individuals for Trafficking in Fentanyal, as well as several others on various drug related charges. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden, on Tuesday, October 3, Narcotics Agents were following up on information about the trafficking activities of Blayden Lane Woodall, age 20 of Fyffe. Agents stopped Woodall on Airport Road where they found pressed fentanyl in his vehicle. Later during a search of Woodall’s residence, 271 pressed fentanyl pills were also found. Woodall was charged with Trafficking in any Illegal Drug and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. In a separate incident on October 3, a search warrant was obtained to check the vehicle of Shane Thomas Wright Jr, age 32 of Valley Head, who had previously been placed in the DeKalb County Detention Center. A DeKalb County Deputy and K-9 had a positive alert on the vehicle finding synthetic marijuana. Wright was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Harassment, Public Intoxication, Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. A day earlier on Monday, October 2, DeKalb County Narcotics Agents went to a residence on Bailey Chapel Road in Powell to follow up on a tip about drug use. When Agents arrived, methamphetamine was spotted on the front porch. Once inside the residence, Agents also found over 30 pressed Fentanyl pills. As a result, Kansas Shay Wilkerson, age 25 of Section, was charged with Trafficking in any Illegal Drug, Unlawful Possession of Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and three warrants for Failure to Appear. Justin Dewayne Gilbreath, age 25 of Sylvania, was charged with Trafficking in any Illegal Drug (x2) and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Gilbreath had been out on bond for Trafficking in Fentanyl for less than a month. Additionally, Bruce Dewayne Rowland, age 59 of Rainsville was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Bondsman off Bond. Paula Majorie Edwards, age 45 of Henagar, was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. “Any opioid use is risky, but Fentanyl is a whole new level of risk,” said Sheriff Welden. “Even in the smallest of dose, fentanyl can be deadly. Other drugs you may be addicted to could be laced with deadly levels of fentanyl and you would never know it, until it was too late.” Welden added that there are two kinds of Fentanyl. One is pharmaceutical fentanyl which is prescribed by a physician to treat severe pain, especially after surgery and for advanced stage cancer patients. The other is illegally made fentanyl, liquid or powder, which is commonly mixed with other drugs. It can also be made into pills that are made to look like other prescription pills. “Fentanyl is being mixed with other drugs like heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and even marijuana,” noted Harris. Jay was recently sworn in as the first chief of police at Gadsden State Community College. Freeman took the reins Freeman as chief of police on July 3. He currently oversees a total of 19 employees working for the Gadsden State Police and Public Safety Department. “Jay hit the ground running the moment he arrived on campus,” Gadsden State President Kathy Murphy said. “I am excited about the progress we are making. I want to thank him for accepting this challenge.” Joe Nabors, the district judge in Etowah County, has complimented his good friend for his work ethic. “Jay is an amazing individual that has a calming presence,” he said. “He’s a man of integrity and a man of faith. I’m proud to call him my friend and I’m proud that he is the chief of police at Gadsden State.” District Attorney Jody Willoughby led Freeman in the reading of the Oath of Office during the swearing- in ceremony. The new chief was joined by his wife, Laura Champion Freeman, and their daughters, Parker Kate, 11; Lennyn Grace, 6; and Ellie Jay, 4. “It’s a great honor to be here today,” he said. “I’m excited about being the chief of police. I’m dedicated to the excellence at this college.”

Freeman pledged to be transparent and accountable. He also said his goals are to increase technology, invest in the employees who work for the department and create partnerships that will lead Gadsden State to being a training hub for local law enforcement. “I hold myself to the highest standards,” he said. “I don’t believe in short cuts. I have always been taught to treat others with respect and that’s what I do. Respect is the cornerstone of any community.” Freeman gave credit for his engrained love of community service to his grandmother, Janet Gregerson. “I always saw her treating others with respect,” he said. “She was always helping others. She is the definition of a lady of service.” Through her, he realized that kind words, a helping hand and encouragement go a long way. “Every person has a story,” he said. “Every person has things going on in their life. At the end of the day, we need to do what’s right. Any small gesture can make a huge difference in the lives of others.”

Alabama Football Back In AP Top 10 The Third Saturday in October showdown between the Crimson Tide and the University of Tennessee was a key SEC battle, as well as one of national significance. Alabama struggled early against the visiting Volunteers, falling behind 13-0. The Tide trailed 20-7 at halftime, before a dominating second half performance helped Alabama pull out a 34-20 victory over the Vols. With the win, Alabama sits in the driver’s seat for the SEC West title at 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the SEC standings. Additionally, the win helped the Crimson Tide climb back into the AP Top 10, as the program moved from No. 11 to No. 9 in the October 22, 2023 Top10 AP Poll. Alabama dominated the statistics over the final 30 minutes of the game on Saturday, in Tuscaloosa, limiting Tennessee to only 129 total yards in the second half. By Brandon K. Pierce The Sports Ledger Deontae Lawson led the Crimson Tide’s defense with 12 tackles. Teammate Jihaad Campbell added 10 tackles and a fumble recovery that he ran back for a touchdown. Overall, the Alabama defense combined for eight tackles for loss, four sacks and four pass breakups. Crimson Tide Quarterback Jalen Milroe completed 14 of his 21 passes for 220 yards and a pair of scores, marking the fifth time in seven starts this season that he has thrown for at least 220 yards and at least two touchdowns. Teammate Jermaine Burton had four catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, while Isaiah Bond also found paydirt, finishing with three catches for 77 yards. Running back Jase McClellan led the ground attack, finishing with 115 of the Crimson Tide’s 138 total rushing yards. Alabama place kicker Will Reichard made a pair of field goal attempts against Tennessee. He has now made 28 consecutive field goals. The last time Reichard missed a field goal came on a 50-yard attempt last year at Tennessee. With his nine points on the night (two field goals and three extra points), Reichard climbed to No. 5 on the NCAA all-time career points list with 495. With five more points, he would become just the fourth player in NCAA history to score 500 or more points in their career. Reichard may get the opportunity in the Crimson Tide’s next contest on November 4 against LSU. With a win against the Tigers, the Crimson Tide can secure its spot in the SEC Championship. The Championship game would most likely be against the currently undefeated and the top ranked Georgia. Georgia was ranked No. 1 in the nation for the 19th consecutive week when the October 22 poll was released. Overall, there are eight undefeated teams in the current AP Top 25. These include No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Florida State, No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 19 Air Force and No. 25 James Madison.
