Object: A piece of white silk 12 inches square. Block out an inch square in the middle and color it with black ink. Begin the lesson with the black concealed in one hand.

Object: A piece of white paper 8)4x11 inches. (Fold each end to within !4 inch of the middle, leaving a gap of )4 inch. In this space print the word, “ SOLOMON.” Open the folds and using the letters in the word “ SOLOMON” complete the words, “WISDOM, GOLD, PLEASURE, WOMEN, MEN, ONLY VANITY.” Lesson: The name on this- piece of paper was of one of the greatest kings of Israel. In thinking of him, there are many things we recall. Perhaps the most outstanding thing for which he is re membered is his wisdom. We will open the paper and see what we find. Yes, wisdom is the first thing which fits into his name. You will remember that God gave him the choice of riches or wisdom, and he chose wisdom. Be cause he made this choice he not only

Lesson: I hold in my hand a piece of beautiful silk 12 inches square. It has 144 square inches in it. This beauti ful piece of silk reminds me of king Solomon. It was said, “ And Judah and Israel ' dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dhn even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon. And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt” (1 Ki. 4:25, 29, 30). There were many wonderful things about the kingdom of Solomon. In many ways it was the most wonderful reign of any of Israel’s kings. As I unfold this piece of silk, what is the most noticeable thing about it? The black square in the middle, I hear some one say. Correct, and the life of Solomon was in a large manner spoiled by his later sin. In 1 Kings 11:4, 6, 9 we read, “ For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father . . . And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and went not fully after the Lord, as did David his father . . . And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice.” The only thing about the silk that is noticeable is the black square. It is too bad, because there are 143 square inches clean and white, and only one is black ened, representing sin. Boys and girls it is this way in life—A Christian may do many wonderful services for the Lord, and then later get his life stained with some sin. When this happens, the good things are forgotten by the people who know him, and only the sin is re membered. His whole influence counts for nothing in the sight of men. Chris tians should always rely upon God’s power to save and keep them from sin which mars their testimony. S E P T E M B E R , 1 9 4 8

received wisdom, but God gave him rich es as well. The next word which fits into his name is the word “ GOLD.” No king who ever lived in Jerusalem was richer than he. Next, we notice the word “ PLEAS URE.” Solomon had given himself over to enjoy pleasure. We read, “ I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with [enjoy] mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure” (Eccl. 2:1). “WOMEN” is the next word fitting into his name. Not only did he have many wives, but he had women servants as well. We now see the word “ MEN” in his name. He had a great army and many men servants. If it had been possible for a person to get real joy out of worldly things, Solomon would have done so, but we find that he said, “ Behold, this also is vanity” (Eccl. 2:1). The last two words which fit into his name are “ ONLY VANITY.” This rec ord of Solomon’s experiments in trying to find satisfaction in the things of the world is left for us in order that we might not make the same mistakes which he did. We should rather seek satisfac tion in the salvation which is in Christ and in spiritual things.
