Celebrating Wins and Preparing

The start of a new year can be exciting, refreshing, and invigorating. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and to celebrate the wins. As this issue of Civil + Structural Engineer Magazine features the Yearbook of Engineer Achievement Award winners, we recognize some impressive accomplishments. The start of the new year is also a time to set intentions and the direction for the year. So, amid celebrating the wins and reflecting, many of us find ourselves faced with uncertainty and numerous challenges. Whether it's the great resignation, recruitment and retention, or an increase in operational efficiency necessary to remain competitive in the face of record-high inflation levels, 2022 is laden with opportunity for those organizations that can set themselves apart during periods of uncertainty. Despite these challenges and many others, people continue to succeed, and I found myself asking: “What sets people and organizations apart?” So, I investigated the research to determine what it generally says about the topic. Studies indicate that leadership, strong communication, innovation, change orientation, and conflict management all contribute to project and organizational success. But how does that translate to us and the work we do every day—how do we implement these constructs to drive organizational success? 1. Know and understand your organization. What are your values and what drives leadership and the employees to perform at an elite level? How do your processes embody these values? The organizations that link everyday pursuits and activities to the overarching values of the organization demonstrate increased overall effectiveness. It is not enough to communicate your values on websites or in an employee handbook. The day-to-day work and the processes and tools that you use to deliver value to your stakeholders and clients must be linked to the overall reason why the organization exists. 2. Be willing to learn, train, and grow, perhaps in unconventional ways. Continue to develop skill sets and have a platform for this. Many industry leaders are looking for training opportunities to ensure they are practicing cutting edge skills, both technical and non- technical, and the organizations that thrive are those that recognize the need for training in the skills that are linked to organizational success. 3. Message and position. Once you have a strong identity and a way to share this within your organization, share it with others. Having innovative offerings and training can be instrumental in recruiting and retention of strong employees and these solid practices combined with skilled employees will lead to better projects with desired clients. 4. Evolve as needed. Be resilient, open, forward thinking, and responsive. Often, especially during times of uncertainty, the organization’s ability to adapt to the evolving marketplace is more important than the organization’s ability to “get it right” out of the gate. As we enter this new year, let’s celebrate the opportunity to head into uncharted territory. It’s not an easy task to work though the above-mentioned areas, but it will be transformational, contribute to ongoing success, and create more resilient organizations and an overall more resilient AEC landscape. Increased resilience will create new opportunities for people to contribute to the industry and will provide renewed confidence to organizational leaders that they can not only weather difficult times but that they can thrive on the challenges they bring. Investing in yourself and your teams to build on your strengths and expand skills will serve as a way to set yourself apart for clients, potential employees, current employees, and other stakeholders and we welcome the opportunity to support you in your journeys.

Civil+Structural Engineer Magazine’s Inaugural YEA Winners

The inaugural YEA Awards were given to projects that demonstra- bly impacted sustainability and community improvement while also moving the AEC industry forward through groundbreaking innova - tion and the development of new technical processes. Some of these winning projects used alternative, environmentally-friendly materi- als as a part of the design process. Materials such as polycarbonate ringmail for shading and expansive timber for framing impact their local communities while also driving the AEC industry towards more sustainable building practices. Still, other projects are innovative in their ability to combine form and function. From shipping containers being repurposed as office units to a senior housing community that also provides housing for college students with children, the inaugu- ral YEA winners provide crucial support within their setting and a model for others to follow. Many of these winning projects are critical to the sustained health of their communities. Several of our winning projects feature water and stormwater solutions to communities that are in dire need. These solu - tions come in the form of ensuring water redundancy for a growing community, storing and managing water in a historically water-poor area, and enhancing water capacity to a growing industrial area. At the same time, whether through particular changes in design or long term planning considerations, these projects are models for further address- ing the needs of underserved communities. As we move forward into another new year, fraught with the endless challenges of the unknown, the inaugural YEA winners demonstrate the paths that we must take to move the AEC industry forward. And, as the builders and designers of the world around us, this will, in turn, move the world around us forward. As the engineers, architects, build - ers, designers, and carpenters of years past rose to meet the challenges of their age, these projects are cast in that same spirit, allowing us to rise to the challenges of an unknown future.

This special issue of Civil+Structural Engineer Magazine marks the conclusion of our inaugural Yearbook of Engineering Achievement (YEA) awards and the announcement of our winners. Our first ever field of competitors for the award ran the gamut from water infrastruc- ture projects to new applications of ringmail as a shading material. The average size of firms being honored in this issue is just under 360 employees with the smallest winner having just six employees and the largest winner having over 1,000. Our inaugural YEA winners are projects that significantly impact not only the communities in which they are located, but also the AEC industry as a whole and our conver - sations about sustainability and equity. In the same way, these projects span not only the United States, but the entire world in location and impact. Out of the 11 projects selected as YEA award winners, 9 different states are represented, from the East Coast to the West Coast as well as the South and the Upper Midwest, with one project located in Dubai. These projects are residential and commercial buildings, pedestrian and transportation infrastructure projects, and water and stormwater infrastructure projects that serve a vital role in the communities they serve. In some cases, our winners are part of larger redevelopment projects, seeking to improve underserved communities over the long run. Other winning projects present innovative solutions to commercial and resi- dential issues in both urban and suburban communities. At an average cost of just under $20,900,000 per project, these winning submissions demonstrate a willing investment in both protecting and rejuvenating communities that need it most. There are numerous projects amongst our inaugural YEA winners that are parts, both large and small, of larger initiatives to improve particular areas and communities. In some cases, these projects are aimed at improving the quality of life in underserved areas while, in other cases, these projects provide critical infrastructure to growing communities.

Project Overview: The Mountain Avenue West Recharge Basin is a 40-acre recharge facility that is part of the larger San Jacinto Valley En- hanced Recharge and Recovery Program (SJVERRP). Located close to residential neighborhoods, a public park, and critical transportation and utility infrastructure, completion of this project was paramount to reducing the operational risk associated with the recharge facility. This project features three separate basin facilities: one for de-sitting and flow distribution and the other two for recharge operations. The two basins responsible for recharge operations are capable of recharging up to 30,000 acre-feet per year. The project also fea- tures several mitigation and safety features such as rigid dust control measures, embankment slope lining with soil cement to reduce lateral transmission of recharge water and eliminate slope erosion, a perim- eter berm to reduce traffic distractions, basin water monitors tied into a supervisory control and data acquisition system, and eleven groundwater monitoring wells around the site. In addition, the project features perimeter and landscape trail improvements that utilize native, drought tolerant vegetation and a water-efficient dip irrigation system.

In an environ- ment where water usage is always a subject of discussion, this fa- cility allows the community to plan for the future by allowing for conjunctive use of advanced purified water, surface, and groundwater resources. During wet years, surplus water will be stored in the basin, which allows future access when the area is experiencing a drought. In addition to providing more accessible, reliable, and sustainable resources for the community, it also allows for recre - ation with a 1-mile walking trail around the facility. Project Overview: With the charge of making FAMU Way “the most beautiful roadway,” this premier Tallahassee project was unanimously approved by the City of Tallahassee Commission to enhance transportation and serve as a major community investment.

The vision to create a seamless connection between Florida State University and Florida A&M University was achieved by providing a safe and beautiful mobility corridor for all forms of transportation. This pristine and innovative corridor eases traffic congestion, connects neighborhoods to other parts of the city and provides economic opportunity, social growth and the opportunity for citizens to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. The project extended FAMU Way from South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to North Lake Bradford Road, transforming a segment of existing roadway and constructing a new roadway to complete the desired connectivity. Due to an existing railroad and power transmission lines running throughout the corridor, the project team was challenged to design a roadway that could accommodate these barriers without sacrificing community goals. The project was designed to achieve multimodal access and become a staple within the community. FAMUWay includes four aesthetic and functional roundabouts, wide sidewalks, a multiuse trail connecting to the St. Marks Trail, multiple community gathering places, a children’s playground, on-street parking, high-quality landscaping and hardscape, and much more. Since its opening, the community has embraced FAMU Way and it has indeed successfully become “the most beautiful roadway” in Tallahassee.

Impact(s): The FAMU Way Corridor project is an exceptional example of holistic design through collaboration with a diversity of stakeholders. Project Overview: The WonderCool Installation at the 2020 World Expo is a soaring 130,000 square foot kinetic shade canopy that greets new arrivals to what is considered the Olympic Games of architecture and construction. When other shading materials failed to endure 100+ degree heat, desert winds, and humidity, the Dubai World Trade Center and the rest of the planning team turned to Kaynemaile. Kaynemaile’s WonderCool canopy created a passive heat management system providing 70 percent shade protection over the entrance to the expo ground. In addition, the canopy’s 55 overhead screens that run the 60 meter length of the entrance hall move in a fluid motion, which creates a calming sensory experience. These screens consist of interlocked rings of engineering grade polycarbon- ate, combined using a patented liquid injection molding and assembly process. The “ringmail” structure of the mesh allows the fluid move- ment of the installation while also deflecting visible and infrared light waves as well as durability against wind forces. Unlike most of the 192 World Expo country pavilions which are destined for removal or redevelopment after the event closes, the Dubai World Trade Center Arrival Hall and its Kaynemaile WonderCool canopy are considered legacy installations, meaning it will continue to greet guests with a moment of wonder for many events in the future. Impact(s): The WonderCool Installation represents a sustainable so- lution to taming one of the harshest environments on the planet. The success of Kaynemaile’s WonderCool material in this environment is im- portant as the world continues to grapple with the effects of climate change. The process to create Kaynemaile mesh has a minimal environmental impact, and end-of-life mesh can be shipped back to their factory to be repurposed.

Project Overview: The Joseph A. Willhelm Industrial Pump Station Project began in 2010 when the Gulf Coast Water Authority (GCWA) retained LAN to evaluate a pump station built in 1949. After evaluating various rehabilitation alternatives, LAN’s team determined that the risks associated with rehabilitation far outweighed the risks associated with constructing a new pump station. The scope of this new pump station was wide and work included performing transient calculations to design surge relief facilities, site civil design of drainage and utility improvements, design of a new intake struc- ture to accommodate three existing five-foot wide traveling screens and three new eight-foot wide traveling screens, relocation of the nine existing vertical turbine pumps, new steel pump discharge and header piping, and more. When installing the three existing vertical turbine pumps, LAN’s team had to provide options for future replacement pumps with discharge above the pump house floor. To allow for this, LAN’s discharge piping design included novel provisions for connection above or below the slab with minimal modifications. The project also features unique pump discharge piping that is joined with rigid roll-grooved joints and couplings that make the installation of future connections much easier. To support the new piping design, a custom-designed carbon steel pipe was installed with imbedded bolts. Impact(s): This project is essential for maintaining uninterrupted water service GCWA’s customers in the Texas City Industrial Com - plex, which is a leading center in the United States for the petro- chemical industry. By ensuring this uninterrupted water to one of the area’s leading industries, the Joseph A. Willhelm Industrial Pump Station provides stability and growth to an industry that already supports upwards of 5,000 jobs in the area. Project Overview: The Heartwood Greenway Sys- tem, located in Omaha, Nebraska reimagines climate change infrastructure design and furthers the idea of what a public park can and should be. From inception, MSLA was determined to go beyond managing stormwater and saw this as an opportunity to forge a more meaningful connection between people and their ecological surroundings in response to disastrous floods which have taken more than a billion-dollar toll on the region. Prioritizing both aesthetics and function, MSLA conceived a sinuous progression of 13 sculptural basins showcasing the wonder of nature front and center offering a range of experiences throughout the seasons. These limestone- clad basins will have the capacity to capture and store an estimated 55 million gallons or 170-acre feet of stormwater runoff. With recent flooding in mind, the basins are designed to accommodate 100-year storms with the peak discharge leaving the basins to embody the site’s pre-development agri- cultural field conditions. In addition to managing high flood volumes, the basins help treat the water at the first half inch of runoff by al - lowing sediment to settle before it enters the public sewer system. Other work in this project includes storm lines being routed to enter all 13 basins on axis and weathered steel embedded in the stepped limestone walls to elegantly frame infrastructure. Impact(s): This holistic approach to climate infrastructural design is complemented by the fact that people can easily access it and par- ticipate with it. Over fourteen miles of universally accessible trails extend throughout the project’s 500 acres and connect with Omaha’s “Paths of Discovery” network. These thoroughfares bring greater con- tinuity to Omaha’s multi-modal trail network and give all residents the life-affirming opportunity to experience wild lands and their inhabitants. From council rings, sledding hills, playgrounds, a waterpark, picnic and bonfire clearings, Heartwood is studded with amenities. This project represents a transformative new approach to the development of infrastructure in which utility and beauty can work in tandem.

Project Overview: The Beecher Terrace Senior Building project is part of a larger movement to return Louisville’s Rus- sell neighborhood to its early desirability and prestige. After decades of flooding, deficient public housing development, and misguided urban renewal efforts, the Russell neighborhood was in desperate need of redevel- opment. The redevelopment of the Beecher Terrace complex is a vital part of this renewal. The Beecher Terrace Complex sits on 31.4 acres, directly adjacent to the city’s downtown central business district across 9th street. A phased revitalization of the neighborhood, this project includes 640 housing units, featuring 620 mixed-use rentals, senior housing, and 20 homeownership units. In addition, this development will comprise 39 new buildings and public roadways. The first phase of the project is the senior building. The Beecher Terrace Senior building is an incredible first step in this revitalization process; the building is a four-story wood framed structure, approximately 111,857 square feet in size, that contains 117 units for seniors and onsite manage - ment offices. It also features offices, fitness centers, a crafts room, billiards, a doctor exam office, a salon, lounges, and a community dining and warming kitchen. All walls in the structure are made of prefabricated wood wall panels and the floor and roof framing were constructed using pre-engineering wood trusses. Impact(s): The Beecher Terrace Senior Building project is part of a larger project to help attract investment into the Russell neighborhood, which will subsequently improve the quality of life for all residents. One of the major goals is to attract retail and commercial offerings while simultaneously decreas - ing the number of vacant buildings in the neighborhood. This project also has

Project Overview: The Trinity Woods Residential and Senior Housing Development project was created as a result of a partnership between the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), Mount Mary University, and the City of Milwaukee. This project came to fruition when the SSND relocated from their former residence in the Village of Elm Grove to a new 258,366 square foot, multi-generational community on the campus of Mount Mary University called Trinity Woods. This new facility creates space for a community that provides housing and support for SSND, aging seniors, and single mothers who attend the university as well as their children. The space also includes a daycare and early childhood center that are integrated into the existing University campus. Trinity Woods features 90 senior living apartments, 24 dormitory units for students with children, and 52 residences for the SSND. raSmith provided a variety of technical services to support the design and construction of the $40 million development project, including site civil engineering, structural engineering, land surveying, wetland and woodland evaluation, endangered resources review, traffic assessment, stormwater management, landscape architecture, grant writing, and municipal entitlement. The Trinity Woods building contains a primarily wooden frame construction on a precast concrete podium. Due to the sloping project site, the project contains a partially exposed basement area, which is made possible using concrete retaining walls and cantilevered basement walls.

Impact(s): The Trinity Woods Project is significant in both its impact on the University community and advancement of more sustainable building techniques. raSmith’s team utilized new wood frame products and connections that allowed for a larger and more complex wood frame structure. Trinity Woods also incorporates green infrastructure such as porous pavement and bioswale system, building with nature to mimic the water cycle on a local level. These green infrastructure elements also offer improved protection and restoration of the Menomonee River, which is an urbanized watershed. Highlights: • Firewalls allowed for a wood building that is drastically larger than what is typically seen (258,336 square feet) • Cantilevered steel columns, braced at the foundation level and tied into the lateral system at the first floor to support the roof structure, allow for the design of large, open spaces •Acombination of concrete walks, patios, and vegetated porous pavement allowed for the design of a variety of outdoor rooms for resident use while also providing unrestricted access for emergency responders
