Impact(s): The Trinity Woods Project is significant in both its impact on the University community and advancement of more sustainable building techniques. raSmith’s team utilized new wood frame products and connections that allowed for a larger and more complex wood frame structure. Trinity Woods also incorporates green infrastructure such as porous pavement and bioswale system, building with nature to mimic the water cycle on a local level. These green infrastructure elements also offer improved protection and restoration of the Menomonee River, which is an urbanized watershed. Highlights: • Firewalls allowed for a wood building that is drastically larger than what is typically seen (258,336 square feet) • Cantilevered steel columns, braced at the foundation level and tied into the lateral system at the first floor to support the roof structure, allow for the design of large, open spaces •Acombination of concrete walks, patios, and vegetated porous pavement allowed for the design of a variety of outdoor rooms for resident use while also providing unrestricted access for emergency responders
