MADD Upper Midwest November Newsletter 2023

MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING A MONTHLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER MINNESOTA, NORTH DAKOTA, & SOUTH DAKOTA REGION

NOVEMBER 2023 • ISSUE 9 • VOLUME 1

This year, on December 7th, the MADD Upper Midwest Region will host our annual Candlelight Vigil VIRTUALLY via the MADD MN, MADD ND and MADD SD Facebook pages. Last year, we had UPCOMING REGIONAL MADD EVENT: VIRTUAL CANDLELIGHT VIGIL numerous victim survivors, law enforcement agencies, and other community partners come together to show their support. We invite you to honor those who have been injured or killed in substance-impaired driving crashes by joining us at 7:00pm CT for a moment of remembrance and lighting of luminaries. Throughout the day, we will also post memorial tributes and moments of honor. If you are interested in taking part in this year’s candlelight vigil and would like to receive a luminary bag, tealight candle and token of honor, please complete the RSVP link below. We ask those participating to take a moment (either with us at 7pm or at another time during the day) to light their luminaries as a show of honor and remembrance.

With the holiday season fast approaching, MADD is excited to introduce our new campaign: ToGetThere , which replaces Tie One On for Safety (TOOFS). With victims and survivors held steadfast at the core, we want to infuse new energy into our ambition to create a nation of No More Victims of impaired driving. During the 2023 holiday season - November 1 through January 1 - there are 21 million chances you or a loved on could encounter a drunk driver on the road.** Holidays are meant to be full of love, laughter and lasting memories. Yet, these deeply cherished moments are always at risk. December is Impaired Driving Prevention Month - yet shockingly, drunk driving crashes surge as much as 40% during the holidays. Sadly, 1, 247 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve in 2021 (NHTSA). Save driving solutions have never been more critical! Your support helps ensure that this season, we’ll all get there for more holiday meals, more singalongs and more beloved moments together. Visit MADD.org/ToGetThere to donate, take the pledge to get there safely this holiday season and learn about more ways to get involved.

SAFE PARTY TIPS

Confirm That Guests Have a Safe Way Home - As guests RSVP, confirm they have a plan for a safe way home via a non-drinking designated driver, such as a friend, rideshare service or public transportation. Offer Fun, Non-Alcoholic Beverage Options - Create a hot cocoa bar, a custom coffee bar set up or build your own ice cream soda option! Consider Guests Who Don’t Drink Alcohol - Plan activities like party games or door prizes that do not involve alcohol.

STAY CONNECTED WITH US! We want to stay in touch with you! You can follow us on several social media platforms. MADD will frequently post what is happening on our social media. Like, follow and interact to get the latest updates on all things MADD.

Provide Food - Having plenty of food will help keep your guests from drinking on an empty stomach.

Create a Themed “Mocktail” - Mocktails are a fun alternative that provides the same taste of traditional cocktails without the effects of alcohol for your non- drinking designated drivers and others who prefer not to drink.

Never Serve Alcohol to Someone Under 21 - And never ask anyone under 21 to serve alcohol at parties.

Remember: Only Time Sobers a Person Up - That means you may need to offer the sofa or guest room to party goers who should stay put for the night. Have Fun! - As the thoughtful and responsible host that you are, have fun while staying in your limits to make sure your guests also stay within theirs.
