When the most recent outbreak of human vampirism occurred in the narrow oasis of New Mexico’s lower Rio Grande Valley, the terrifying oral tradition that had been passed on for more than four centuries had yet again been sadly reconfirmed. Every two decades or so, one or more bloodthirsty ghouls would appear that would prey upon the unsuspecting and completely vulnerable members of New Mexico’s small but harmonious and tightly knit community that had long been an admixture of First American, Hispanic, and Anglo residents. As a young curandera, Lorena Pastore was only twenty-five years old when the last outbreak occurred, and she remembered the devastation and shocking horror that had rapidly spread throughout her beloved community at that time. She had erroneously predicted that she would be well into her middle years of life when the next outbreak would be anticipated to once again rear its ugly head. Sadly, that was not to be the case. For some inexplicable reason, after only a brief remission of a little more than a seven-year hiatus, the malignant disease of human vampirism had been reincarnated. This time, the vampiro outbreak was destined to appear on Lorena Pastore’s very own doorstep.

Every two decades or so, one or more bloodthirsty ghouls appears and preys upon the vulnerable members of this small but tightly knit community. As a young curandera , or healer, Lorena Pastore was only twenty-five years old when the last outbreak occurred, and she remembers the shocking horror that spread throughout her beloved community at the time. She erroneously predicted that she would be well into her middle years of life for the next outbreak, but sadly, that is not the case. After a foolish man commits an egregious violation during a spiritual cleansing ritual, the seven years of peace is shattered. The malignant disease of human vampirism is re-incarnated, and Lorena is forced to flee across the Mexican border with a five- year-old in peril. Nathan’s father is becoming a lethal vampire, and the boy is now hunted—as is Lorena as she takes the child into her care and fights the outbreak destined to destroy her home and people.

When a Navajo teen is searching for lost treasures on a plateau north of Chaco Canyon, he discovers an artifact that infects him with the virus responsible for human vampirism. A team of archaeologists investigates the cir- cumstances of what occurred, and unfortunately, the Navajo scientist, Dr. Zachary Hawk, becomes infected with the deadly malady. To escape the wrath of the government’s Night Crawler Protocol, Hawk and a colleague flee to Mexico to avoid a sanctioned execution. When Hawk undergoes a violent transformation to become a human vampire, he joins forces with a band of ruthless children afflicted with the same disease who are terrorizing the community of Santa Sangre. Blake Barker continues his quest to find his kidnapped child in Mexico and Blake garnishes the enmity of the Mexican drug cartel seeking to capture a vampire for their own nefarious purposes. Sadly, Blake contracts a life-threatening malignancy which may lead to his premature demise. Will Blake ever find his missing son? Remnants of the United States Army bio-weapon team which includes two vampires and two mercenary soldiers are reunited to rescue an American colonel amongst others who are held as prisoners of war in Mexico by the drug cartel. Their perilous interdiction into a foreign country will no doubt result in violent mayhem. Lorena Pastore is now the reigning queen of the last of the Maya race living in the Yucatan. Many of the Mayan are political refugees who escaped the four decade long civil war in Guatemala. Lorena authorizes a raiding party to capture a paramilitary war lord who has several vampire body guards. This war criminal was involved in the orchestrated genocide of Mayan people and he must now be brought to justice. The Brotherhood of the Bat is the third and final installment in the VAMPIRO TRILOGY where various individuals and factions are brought together to face an unknown ultimate fate!

Exodus 2: When an Angry God Speaks is about self-discovery and the knowledge of how God sent Peter Presley here for a special purpose. God only revealed Peter’s purpose after his life training was completed so he could move forward with his plan for the remainder of his life. It was important that Peter wrote this book in his own word as a record of how God guided and protected him until he needed him to do his work. This book is to make everyone aware that God is sending a message, not only to his people but to the world, that he is bringing this age to an end. It has been more than 2000 years since God chose to send a message like this to his people. Peter’s life has been a series of events that have uniquely prepared him for the task he will undertake.

It’s a thought we’ve all had before. Is this what I’m supposed to be doing? Did I take a wrong turn somewhere along the way? An entire subgenre of mumblecore indies has blossomed from such universal ennui. At first glance, the Daniels’ deceptively straightforward Everything Everywhere All at Once might be one of them, an Oscar- awardee, no less. ALL AT ONCE

by Marya E. Gates

EW THINGS IN LIFE ARE CERTAIN besides death, taxes, and maybe the never-ending task that is doing laundry. At least that’s where the characters in writer/directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, new film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” find themselves initially. That is, until they take an emotional, philosophical, and deeply weird trip through the looking glass into the multiverse and discover metaphysical wisdom along the way. In this love letter to genre cinema, Michelle Yeoh gives a virtuoso performance as Evelyn Wang, a weary owner of a laundromat under IRS audit. We first meet her enjoying a happy moment with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) and their daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu). We see their smiling faces reflected in a mirror on their living room wall. As the camera literally zooms through the mirror, Evelyn’s smile fades, now seated at a table awash with business receipts. She’s preparing for a meeting with an auditor while simultaneously trying to cook food for a Chinese New Year party that will live up to the high standards of her visiting father Gong Gong (James Hong, wiley as ever). On top of juggling her father’s visit and the tax audit, Evelyn’s sullen daughter Joy wants to bring her girlfriend Becky (Tallie Medel) to the F

The lives of those souls who have suffered at the hands of abuse are a long and arduous journey along a path of utter darkness. If not careful, their walks along the precipice of despair can drop them into the very bowels of insanity and the edge of life and death. Where is the light needed to find the path back from the brink? How does one face down the demons sitting in wait at the borders? Ginny C. Worley has walked these bleak borders and survived. She tells her tale of victim to victor in Poems from the Edge , a stark and revealing poetic voyage through pain and anger turned inward. The torments of the mind and soul are revealed and explored in sharp detail and then, with courage and faith, brought together again as a whole. Poems from the Edge encourages readers to tighten their grasp and hold on. When darkness is all around, and fear, hopelessness, and intense pain are all around, don’t give up. Ginny knows the strength needed to maintain is inside you. Never lose sight that as long as you are able to draw a breath, there is hope.

and serving as a gentle reminder that there’s strength in kindness. As Evelyn and Waymond’s relationship ebbs and flows in iterations through the multiverses, it’s their daughter Joy who proves to be the lynchpin. In a true breakout performance from Stephanie Hsu, Joy represents a growing generational divide. Joy carries the weight of Evelyn’s fractured relationship with her grandfather and the disappointments of an American dream unattained. Her queerness as foreign to her mother as the country was when she herself first arrived. Her aimlessness a greater disappointment because of all that Eveyln sacrificed for her to have more options in life than she did. This pressure manifests in a rebellion so great it stretches beyond the multiverses into a realm where a giant everything bagel looms like a black hole ready to suck everyone into the void. If the void arises from the compounding of generational trauma, the Daniels posit that it can be reversed through the unconditional love passed down through those same generations, if we choose compassion and understanding over judgment and rejection. Chaos reigns and life may only ever make sense in fleeting moments, but it’s those moments we should cherish. Moments of love and camaraderie. Sometimes they happen over time. Sometimes they happen all at once. This review was filed from the premiere at the SXSW Film Festival.

ranging from “The Matrix” to “The Fall” to “2001: A Space Odyssey” to “In The Mood For Love” to “Ratatouille.” Even Michelle Yeoh’s own legacy finds its way into the film with loving callbacks to her Hong Kong action film days and the wuxia classic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” The fight sequences, choreographed by Andy and Brian Le, have a balletic beauty to them, wisely shot by cinematographer Larkin Seiple in wide shots allowing whole bodies to fill the frame. Yeoh is the anchor of the film, given a role that showcases her wide range of talents, from her fine martial art skills to her superb comic timing to her ability to excavate endless depths of rich human emotion often just from a glance or a reaction. She is a movie star and this is a movie that knows it. Watching her shine so bright and clearly having a ball brought tears to my eyes more than once. Just as Evelyn taps into Yeoh’s iconography, facets of Waymond can be found throughout Quan’s unique career. The comic timing from his childhood roles as Data in “The Goonies” and Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” echoes in Evelyn’s nebbish husband. His work as a fight coordinator shows through in Alpha’s slick action hero capable of using a fanny pack to take out a group of attackers. Even his time as an assistant director to Wong Kar Wai on “2046” can be found in the universe where he plays the debonair one who got away. Quan tackles these variations with aplomb, bringing pathos to each

party and her husband wants to talk about the state of their marriage. Just as Evelyn begins to feel overwhelmed by everything happening in her life she’s visited by another version of Waymond from what he calls the Alpha verse. Here humans have learned to “verse jump” and are threatened by an omniverse agent of chaos known as Jobu Tupaki. Soon, Evelyn is thrust into a universe-hopping adventure that has her questioning everything she thought she knew about her life, her failures, and her love for her family. Most of the action is set in an IRS office building in Simi Valley (which, as a Californian, had me in stitches), where Evelyn must battle IRS agent Diedre (Jamie Lee Curtis, having the time of her life), a troop of security guards, and possibly everyone else she’s ever met. Production designer Jason Kisvarday crafts a seemingly endless cubicle-filled office where everything from the blade of a paper trimmer to a butt plug shaped auditor of the year awards become fair game in a battle to save the universe. Editor Paul Rogers’ breakneck pace matches the script’s frenetic dialogue, with layers of universes simultaneously folding into each other while also propelling Evelyn’s internal journey. Match cuts seamlessly connect the universes together, while playful cuts help emphasize the humor at the heart of the film. Born from choices both made and not made, each universe has a distinct look and feel, with winking film references

God is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent. The Bible tells of his powers and more. Everything we need to know to be saved are all in the Bible. Most people, though, think the Bible is simply a written recording of anecdotes of God and his interaction with humans and the testament of his power. That is, however, not all of it. The scholars have excluded the apocrypha, purposely preserving the teachings that are constant throughout the books in the Bible. This makes the Bible more than just the collection of the sacred texts from the days of God. The scholars have observed a system. The Bible Is a Single Book undertakes the project of explaining the outline and theme found in the Bible. This will pave way for readers to be further enlightened when studying the Bible for their salvation.

When the author purchased a property in the mountains, he daydreamed about owning a large tract in the area. On reflection, he asked himself, What will I do with it? Without a use, the land would have no value. This insight showed him that the value of the land depended on the objective for which the land would be used, not some other person’s opinion of its value. As a result, when he studied economics in college, he questioned the basic definition of an economic transaction. Rather than finding that that transaction was an exchange of currency for goods and services, he found that the basic transaction in economics was the use of a resource for accomplishing an objective. This enabled him to look at economies where money was not used. The title of this book, Budget Your Goals Not Your Silver , is the result. Car salesmen are taught not to sell cars but what the cars will be useable for. The real estate agent must sell what the house can be used for and not the house itself. Cash economies must use data, and data is not available unless there is a unit of measurement, but the process of obtaining what is needed is not limited to cash economies. This book discusses the process of economies. As essential as economic studies are, valid economic studies must use data. But understanding the process goes beyond that study.

The government should be a government of people, not money. The Occupy Wall Street movement senses this but lacks focus. This book provides that focus.

The government has roles to play in the safety, conflict resolution, and pooling resources. The roles that the government has to play require strict adherence to the rules. There can be no forgiveness.

Religion asks for perfection. To ask for the impossible guarantees failure. The role religion has to play must have forgiveness for failure to achieve perfection.

This book looks at these roles, part of the essential elements of every man’s life, and finds that the confusion between them is a major part that faces Americans.

H. Doyle Smith has degrees in economics, government, history, and business. This has been augmented with experience in corporate editing, individual taxation, government and military experience, and many other ways that people use to contribute to the society.

The result is a revolutionary point of view that looks at our current difficulties and suggests that our government should attempt to solve problems, rather than bemoan them.

NTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality. Marked annually on March 8th, IWD is one of the most important days of the year to: celebrate women’s achievements, educate and awareness raise for women’s equality, call for positive change advancing women lobby for accelerated gender parity, and fundraise for female-focused charities. Everyone everywhere can play a part in helping forge gender equality. From a wide range of IWD campaigns, events, rallies, lobbying, and performances - to festivals, parties, fun runs, and celebrations - all IWD activity is valid. That’s what makes IWD inclusive. The Women’s Day Observation traces its roots as far back as 1909. Led by the women of the Socialist Party of America, the “National Woman’s Day” was first held on February 28, 1909, in New York City. On March 8, 1914, International Women’s Day was celebrated in Germany and London to fight for women’s right to vote. From 1914 up until today, we celebrate March as Women’s History Month and March 8th as International Women’s Day. In 2010, the British marketing firm, Aurora Ventures set up the International Women’s Day Website and for every year that followed, the website promoted hashtags that highlight not only radical social movements but also promote feel–good messages for women all across the world. For IWD 2023, the global campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity. The campaign aims to encourage important conversations on Why equal I

Upon adopting its resolution on the observance of International Women’s Day, the United Nations General Assembly cited the following reasons: “To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality, and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.” Women’s history month (March) is the month when we reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women in world history. The celebration of Women’s History Month grew from a week-long celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history, and society that was organized by a school district in Sonoma, California in 1978. In 1978, Women’s History Month presentations were given at dozens of schools in Sonoma, California. After a few years, the idea caught on within other communities, school districts, and organizations all across the United States of America. In 1980, then President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the following year after then-President Jimmy Carter’s proclamation, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. After 6 years, the National Women’s History Project was successfully petitioned in congress to expand the event for the entire month of March. International Women’s Month not only celebrates women and their accomplishments but also serves as a reminder of how far we’ve come and how many challenges we still have to overcome. EC

opportunities aren’t enough and Why equal isn’t always fair. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action. We can all challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek out inclusion. Collective activism is what drives change. From grassroots action to wide-scale momentum, we can all embrace equity. And to truly embrace equity, means to deeply believe, value, and seek out the difference as a necessary and positive element of life. To embrace equity means to understand the journey required to achieve women’s equality. IWD was started in 1911, and remains an important moment for working to advance women’s equality with the day belonging to everyone, everywhere. Groups can choose to mark IWD in whatever manner they deem most relevant, engaging, and impactful for their specific context, objectives, and audiences. IWD is about women’s equality in all its forms. For some, IWD is about fighting for women’s rights. For others, IWD is about reinforcing key commitments, while for some IWD is about celebrating success. And for others, IWD means festive gatherings and parties. Whatever choices are made, all choices matter, and all choices are valid. All choices of activity can contribute to, and form part of, the thriving global movement focused on women’s advancement. IWD is a truly inclusive, diverse and eclectic moment of impact worldwide. International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the economic and social achievements of women. Many countries around the world would celebrate this day with demonstrations, educational initiatives, and other customs such as presenting women with gifts and flowers. The United Nations has

LORRI-ANN CHAMPAGNE L. A. Champagne lives life part-time in a wheelchair and leg brace due to the progression of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. She shares her life in Barrie, Ontario with Bill, her partner of 30 years, and is very proud of her growing family. EC Magazines got the chance to talk to her, here’s what...

Tell us more about yourself and how you have decided to publish a book? First off anyone reading “The Common Threads Trilogy” might think that this author, L.A. Champagne might think of it coming from just about anyone. I’ll clear that up. My pen name is my first name, Lorri-Ann. I am a 61 year old senior, disabled lady. I was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. In 1962, that was a death sentence, or mentally retarded and always full paralysis, but usually from the waist or chest down, depending where on your spinal cord is affected (Spina Bifida). It can show up in a few forms - which could mean a small lump on your back (called Spina Bifida Occulta). This is its

baby’s bones are soft) but, while fixing my spine they inserted a shunt in my body, so my excess spinal fluid goes through the shunt and that is how you live! My life was one miracle after another to get this body to grow as normally as I could. But it wasn’t me alone. It was doctors and teachers, family and friends that treated me normally. Most kids didn’t know that I had a unusual birth defect that was supposed to take my life. Enter Guardian Angels, and God that did 99% of the work. What or who inspired you to write this book? My 2nd grandchild. The day of his birth, I went to sleep after a long day. I was up and awake and I had this novel in

mildest form. The worst outcome would be a baby born with no brain and always is stillborn. Then there is my degree of S. B. It is called Mylomeningocele. It means to have been born with a hole in your back with two vertebrae sticking up. In my case, doctors had to put the vertebrae back down in position, making sure they do not tear the membrane covering the hole. That would mean I’d die of infection, because my cerebral spinal fluid would be exposed to the air and any kind of germ could get into the body and easily kill a baby of only 8 lbs. When you have excess or too much cerebral spinal fluid, this is Hydrocephalus. When this happens it can actually make your skull swell, (because

What do you do when you’re not writing? When I write, I fit it in between everything, or sometimes my brain can’t turn off and I write through the night! Mac is always with me wherever I write. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing a book? I learned about myself mostly. By writing the trilogy, I realized that I hate prejudice of any kind and people need to know all the horror that people of other races have suffered at the hands of us - the white people, since time began. My trilogy only covers 150 years of their history. We need to apologize to God and the world, thinking we own the world. school, there was a volunteer program to work in our town hospital and “If I did not write, I would be nursing seniors or working in hospitals and long-term care homes. I started at the age of 15, through high I loved it!” -L.A. Champagne

my head and had to get it on paper! My grandson River is my inspiration. Usually how long does it take from start to finish? From start to finish took me from 2007 to 2021. Six years of writing and 10 years to publish all 3 books in my trilogy. Describe to us a typical day for Lorri-Ann. I wake up and I have an extraordinarily large but funny cat, named Mac (short for McCartney) beside my bed, who informs me it is time to give him breakfast. So after that I get myself, bedroom and clothes ready for the day. My P.S.W. comes to perform a bed bath on me because there are now parts of my body I can’t reach, due to my Spina Bifida and they can do it for me. Then Mac and I go back to bed and get up before lunch. Of course he tells me it’s his lunch time at noon. My afternoons mostly consists of doing email and messages. Then I do jigsaw puzzles and memory games on-line, to keep my mind strong. I do go out sometimes with my sister to play bingo, and other senior events. Often we drive to our dad and step- moms place and we play cards (mostly Eucher) for the afternoon. Dad is 90 and still my personal hero. When I get home in afternoons, I prepare supper for my partner of 30 years. I can still stand up and walk around the kitchen. I don’t like anyone in my kitchen when I’m there; because I love to cook! Bill does the dishes for me. After supper we watch TV, mostly old shows or British comedies and all season we watch every MLB Toronto Blue Jays baseball games!!

What do you think makes a good story? Anything you believe in and as long as you know the subject...or don’t mind months and months of research! Does writing energize or exhaust you? Why or why not? Energized! When I’m done writing for a while and when I get up I’m happy and excited, mostly when the writing involves happy story-lines. But, for example, when I have to kill off one of my characters...I can spend hours to overnight, crying! What one thing would you give up to become a better writer? I’m satisfied and I would give up nothing. What is the most challenging part of your artistic process? I have never believed I had an artistic process! Does your family support your career as a writer? You bet they do! Every last one of them, I think?! If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do? If I did not write, I would be nursing seniors or working in hospitals and long- term care homes. I started at the age of 15, through high school, there was a volunteer program to work in our town hospital and I loved it! That’s how I got started on the nursing bug. How long on average does it take you to write a book? I have only written the three books, my trilogy! I am writing a book on my life, and all the miracles that have brought me to the age of 61. I’m not worried how long it takes. I go at my own speed! EC

Polly was used to people coming and going at her house at all times of the night because her family ran an Underground Railroad station. Strangely, tonight there was more noise than usual, and Mother said noise was the enemy. That night in June 1857, Mother called urgently for Polly to get down to the secret room and bring water with her. When Polly was able to get the heavy sloshing bucket down the narrow stairs, she saw Mother kneeling by a young girl who was about Polly’s age. Her name was Hattie, and her forehead was beaded with sweat, and she was shaking uncontrollably.

Polly knew they would be friends with all the dangers and adventures that go with running the Underground Railroad.
