Their ini- tiatives, ranging from fostering resilience in girls to preventing substance abuse and violence, are transforming lives in the Lima community. Empowering Girls Through GEMS GEMS, the Girls Empowering and Motivating Success Resiliency Program, empowers girls aged 12 to 17. Rooted in the “Placing Black Girls at Promise” research project, GEMS inspires resilience and empowers young women. The program covers topics like body image, diversity, peer relationships, and future planning, ad- dressing emotional, educational, social, and physical well-being. GEMS also educates girls on avoiding violence, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, juvenile crime, and teen pregnancy while enhancing resil- iency and school success. Preventing Substance Abuse with “Keepin’ it REAL” The “Keepin’ it REAL” program targets students aged 12 to 14, fo- cusing on substance abuse prevention. Over ten weeks, trained teachers guide students to assess substance abuse risks, make in- formed decisions, and develop resistance strategies. The curricu- lum emphasizes the REAL acronym—Refuse, Explain, Avoid, and Leave—to reduce substance use among adolescents. Promoting Peace and Reducing Violence The Peace Maker Project aims to prevent violence among ele- mentary and middle school students. A comprehensive approach, combining school-based and community-based interventions, helps reduce aggressive behavior. Middle schools implement the Peace Maker curriculum, while elementary schools follow the Making Allies Making Friends curriculum.
